Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced Business Analyst to support the analysis, mapping, and transformation of scientific instrument and laboratory equipment data within a complex R&D environment.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in data analysis, business requirements gathering, data mapping, data quality, and stakeholder management, with exposure to laboratory, pharmaceutical, life sciences, or scientific R&D environments.
You will work closely with scientists, laboratory operations teams, data engineers, data architects, informatics teams, and data governance stakeholders to translate raw instrument outputs into meaningful, standardised data structures and business requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyse raw instrument and equipment data from laboratory systems, including plate readers, Raman instruments, cell counters, and similar scientific equipment, to understand data structures, formats, relationships, and business meaning.
- Conduct business analysis and requirements gathering with scientists, laboratory operations teams, data engineering, and data architecture teams.
- Define how instrument data should be interpreted, structured, standardised, and consumed across R&D data environments.
- Create and maintain detailed data mapping specifications, mapping raw instrument outputs to standardised business models, taxonomies, ontologies, and downstream data structures.
- Document business rules, transformation logic, data definitions, and data lineage from instrument sources through downstream platforms such as data lakes and analytics environments.
- Collaborate with data architects, data engineers, scientists, and technical SMEs to ensure scientific and business context is accurately represented in technical data models.
- Identify and investigate data quality issues, gaps, inconsistencies, and anomalies within instrument data and work with relevant stakeholders to define appropriate resolutions.
- Develop and maintain data dictionaries, business glossaries, process flows, data flows, and mapping documentation for instrument and equipment data domains.
- Translate complex scientific and instrument outputs into clear business requirements, functional requirements, and user stories for technical delivery teams.
- Manage and track requirements, user stories, and delivery activities using Azure DevOps (ADO) within an Agile environment.
- Work closely with cross-functional stakeholders across laboratory sciences, informatics, data governance, IT, data engineering, and architecture to ensure alignment between scientific objectives and data outcomes.
- Support User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and validation of data mappings, business rules, transformations, and data outputs using real-world instrument data.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of data standards, processes, and governance practices across scientific data domains.

Required Skills & Experience
- 8+ years of experience as a Business Analyst, preferably within Life Sciences, Pharmaceuticals, Scientific R&D, or a similar data-intensive environment.
- Experience working with laboratory instruments, scientific equipment, or instrument-generated data.
- Exposure to instruments such as plate readers, Raman spectroscopy instruments, cell counters, or similar analytical laboratory equipment is highly desirable.
- Strong experience in business analysis, requirements gathering, data mapping, and requirements documentation.
- Ability to analyse raw scientific or instrument-generated data and translate it into structured business logic, data requirements, and meaningful business definitions.
- Experience working with data governance, data quality, data architecture, or data management teams within a large enterprise environment.
- Strong understanding of data mapping, data lineage, data models, business rules, and data transformation concepts.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with both scientific SMEs and technical/business stakeholders.
- Strong documentation skills, including experience creating:
- Data dictionaries
- Business glossaries
- Data mapping specifications
- Process flows
- Data flow diagrams
- Business and functional requirements
- Hands-on experience with Azure DevOps (ADO) in an Agile delivery environment, including backlog management, user stories, sprint tracking, and requirements management.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary teams.

Nice to Have
- Understanding of Pharmaceutical R&D and laboratory processes, including experimental workflows and laboratory data lifecycles.
- Experience with scientific data standards, taxonomies, ontologies, or controlled vocabularies.
- Experience working with data lakes, analytics platforms, or enterprise data platforms.
- Experience supporting UAT, data validation, reconciliation, and data quality initiatives.
- Familiarity with laboratory informatics, scientific informatics, or R&D data management environments.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a data-focused Business Analyst who can bridge the gap between scientific users and technical data teams. They should be comfortable working with complex laboratory/instrument data, understanding its scientific and business context, documenting mappings and business rules, and translating requirements into actionable user stories for engineering teams.
Strong communication, analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with both scientific and technical stakeholders are essential.
