Business Analyst | Energy Trading | Position Reporting | Trade Data | £850/Day Inside IR35

We are working with a major commodities & energy trading firm that is looking for an experienced Business Analyst to join a strategic Position Reporting programme covering Power, Gas, LNG and Oil across multiple regions. The position reporting platform sits across multiple ETRM systems and is being developed to give traders a real-time, flexible view of their positions across different commodities, products and regions.

Rather than relying solely on the native position reporting capabilities within individual ETRMs, the business is building a bespoke platform that takes the underlying trade and ETRM data and presents it in the way traders actually need to see it.

For example, a trader may want to view their position as a Crack Spread, rather than simply seeing the underlying individual trades. Understanding how traders look at their positions, how they want the data represented and how that information should be aggregated and reported is a key part of the programme.

You’ll work closely with Front Office, Middle Office, Risk and Technology teams, acting as the conduit between the business and development teams.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The successful BA will be someone who genuinely understands commodities trading, physical commodities and the trade lifecycle, rather than someone focused purely on ETRM configuration.

You’ll be expected to:

  • Gather and rapidly translate requirements from time-constrained trading stakeholders
  • Understand how traders view and analyse their positions in real time
  • Translate business requirements into user stories, functional requirements and clear documentation
  • Understand trade booking, trade modelling and front-to-back commodities processes
  • Understand how position data can be aggregated and represented across different commodities and asset classes
  • Support the rollout of Position Reporting across Power, Gas, LNG and Oil
  • Work across existing and new ETRM/CTRM platforms, including Endur
  • Work with data from multiple underlying ETRM systems and understand how that data feeds into a consolidated position view
  • Analyse trade data and work with databases, JSON and message files

This is not a role for an ETRM configuration specialist who has spent their career focused purely on one system. Equally, the team is not looking for a heavily technical, ex-developer BA. They need someone who can face off to the business, understand the trading requirement and bridge the gap between traders and developers.

‼️Experience across Power and Gas, Physical Oil and broader commodities is particularly relevant, alongside exposure to position reporting projects and multiple ETRM/CTRM environments.

This is a great opportunity for a BA who wants to work on a strategic position-reporting platform with genuine exposure to multiple commodities, regions and ETRM environments, helping shape how traders consume and interact with their position data rather than simply working within the reporting functionality of a single ETRM.
