I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What we're looking for
Experience is useful, but attitude, work ethic, and willingness to learn are more important.
We're looking for someone who:
- Has a strong work ethic and is willing to put the work in
- Is comfortable being challenged and receiving feedback

- Takes responsibility for their own development
- Communicates confidently and professionally
- Can work independently while contributing to a team
- Is competitive with themselves and wants to keep improving
- Understands that progression comes from developing capability, not simply time served
Progression

The aim is to give people the skills and experience to take greater control of their own career direction rather than following a fixed progression path.
Why this role?
This isn't designed as a traditional 9–5 role where development stops at a job description.
You'll be expected to learn, adapt, take feedback, and gradually take on more responsibility.
If you're looking for a role where your development is something you actively contribute to, rather than something that happens automatically, this could be a good fit.
