FORMAL 12-MONTH PERFORMANCE REVIEW FOR ENTRY INTO A 5% EQUITY PATHWAY

Michel D. Painting, Decorating & Building Ltd is looking to appoint a small number of experienced self-employed Business Development & Contracts Partners to help build the next commercial stage of our Birmingham-based construction and property-maintenance business.

This is not a conventional salaried sales vacancy.

We already have the operational delivery platform.

We are looking for exceptional commercial professionals who can open doors, build senior relationships, identify genuine opportunities and help secure profitable contracts.

1. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Minimum 5 years’ relevant professional experience.

Relevant backgrounds may include:

  • Business development
  • Construction
  • Property
  • Facilities management
  • Housing
  • Commercial sales
  • Contracts
  • Procurement
  • Account management
  • Property services
  • Commercial recruitment
  • B2B relationship management
  • Public-sector and contractor supply chains

You must have something real to bring to the table

That may include:

  • An established professional network
  • Existing relationships with decision-makers
  • Relevant industry contacts
  • Knowledge of live commercial markets
  • Routes into potential clients or supply chains
  • Experience securing contracts
  • A proven record of opening doors
  • Experience developing profitable accounts
  • Strong commercial strategy
  • Evidence that you can create genuine business opportunities

You will never be expected to disclose confidential or protected information belonging to another organisation.

However, this is not an entry-level opportunity.

If you have no relevant experience, no commercial track record and no credible strategy for generating business, this opportunity is unlikely to be suitable.

2. COMMISSION STRUCTURE

Contract 1

50% of agreed project profit

Contract 2

40% of agreed project profit

Contract 3

40% of agreed project profit

Contract 4 onward

30% of agreed project profit — ongoing and uncapped

For exceptional strategic, framework, recurring or major long-term opportunities, separate enhanced commercial terms may be agreed where appropriate.

Commission becomes payable once the relevant client funds have cleared.

3. FULL COMMERCIAL TRANSPARENCY

We believe that if somebody’s earnings depend on project profit, they should be able to understand exactly how that profit has been calculated.

For each qualifying contract, the Commercial Partner will have access through the company’s shared commercial system to the relevant project financial information.

Subject to appropriate confidentiality and access controls, this will show the figures relevant to that project, including where applicable:

  • Contract value
  • VAT
  • Materials
  • Direct labour
  • Subcontractor costs
  • Specialist trades
  • Plant and equipment
  • Waste and skips
  • Other agreed direct project costs
  • Agreed project profit
  • Applicable commission percentage
  • Final commission payable

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

The company and the Commercial Partner will therefore work from the same relevant project figures.

HOW COMMISSION IS CALCULATED

Commission is not calculated on the total contract value.

The principle is:

Contract value minus agreed direct project costs equals agreed project profit

The relevant 50%, 40% or 30% commission rate is then applied to that agreed project profit.

No hidden figures. No guesswork. No different version of the numbers.

The Commercial Partner will be able to see exactly how the final commission figure has been reached.

4. ACCOUNT ORIGINATOR GUARANTEE

If you personally introduce and help secure a genuinely new client, that client can be formally registered internally as an Originated Account.

Subject to the written commercial agreement and your continued active involvement, you will remain the recognised commercial lead on that account for the agreed protection period.

The principle is straightforward:

If you create a valuable client relationship, that contribution should be recognised.

Qualifying repeat work from an Originated Account may continue to generate commission in accordance with the agreed account terms.

Where an account develops into a framework, recurring maintenance programme, strategic partnership or substantial long-term relationship, the commercial arrangement may be reviewed and enhanced.

5. FIRST 12 MONTHS — PROVING PERIOD

Company ownership is not an automatic joining benefit.

The first 12 months are designed to establish whether there is a genuine long-term commercial partnership.

Each individual will be assessed on their actual contribution, including:

  • Profitable business generated
  • Quality of contracts secured
  • Commercial judgement
  • Reliability
  • Accountability
  • Professional communication
  • Client relationship management
  • Leadership
  • Creativity
  • Strategic thinking
  • Contribution to business improvement
  • Respect for colleagues and clients
  • Protection of the company’s reputation
  • Long-term commitment

We reward impact, responsibility, professionalism and value creation.

We do not measure somebody’s value simply by how many hours they remain at a desk.

6. PATHWAY TO 5% COMPANY OWNERSHIP

Following a successful 12-month performance review, an exceptional Commercial Partner may be invited into a formally documented equity pathway.

A proposed progression may include:

  • After 12 months — 1%
  • After 18 months — Additional 1.5%
  • After 24 months — Additional 2.5%
  • Total potential ownership — 5%

The 5% opportunity is reserved for somebody who demonstrates exceptional contribution to the long-term growth and success of the company.

It is not given simply for being present.

It must be earned through:

  • Results
  • Commercial contribution
  • Professionalism
  • Reliability
  • Loyalty
  • Leadership
  • Business improvement
  • Client development
  • Strategic value
  • Consistent commitment

Any equity award will be subject to formal company documentation, agreed milestones, the company’s Articles of Association and a Shareholders’ Agreement.

7. BUILD YOUR OWN COMMERCIAL DIVISION

A high-performing Commercial Partner should not necessarily remain an individual salesperson forever.
