James Robertshaw & Sons

Business Development Lead

Field-based | Full-time | Monday-Friday | £40,000 + uncapped commission

We have been making exceptional things since 1860. Now we are looking for someone just as good to sell them.

James Robertshaw & Sons is one of the UK's leading designers, manufacturers and installers of bespoke blinds, awnings and retractable roofing solutions. Everything we make is designed and manufactured at our Bolton headquarters and has been for over 160 years.

Our clients include Liverpool Football Club, Wembley Stadium, Guy's and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, Bruntwood, Vinci Construction and Old Spitalfields Market. We work with independent restaurants, high street retailers, architects, property developers, schools, hospitals and homeowners across the UK. The product is outstanding, and our reputation is real. We are now investing in building a commercial team to match both.

The Opportunity

This is a field-based business development lead role. You will be responsible for finding new clients, building lasting relationships, and growing revenue across our key sectors.

There is no large marketing function handing you leads. You will be expected to generate your own opportunities through direct outreach, field activity, AI-assisted prospecting, and the conversations that come from knowing your market. In return, you will have a Head of Sales who is invested in your development, a product that clients buy once they see it, and the backing of a close-knit family business that gives its people real autonomy.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

You’ll spend around 60% to 70% of your time on the road visiting clients and prospects on site, taking samples, presenting our range and bringing people to our Bolton customer centre to see what we do first-hand.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Identifying and pursuing new business across sectors including leisure and hospitality, retail, property and developments, education, healthcare and trade.
  • Building a strong, well-qualified pipeline and managing it through to close.
  • Meeting clients and prospects in their own space, whether on site, in their offices or at our Bolton customer centre.
  • Managing and growing the accounts you open, staying in touch and spotting opportunities for repeat and additional business.
  • Developing relationships with trade clients and with the interior designers, shopfitters and architects who specify and procure on behalf of their own clients.
  • Producing a monthly written update for the Head of Sales on pipeline and commercial progress, which feeds into reporting to the directors.

What We Are Looking For

  • A minimum of three years’ experience in field sales or business development across B2B and B2C, with a track record of winning new business and building long-term client relationships.
  • Confident, credible, and comfortable in front of clients at every level.
  • Commercially self-sufficient. You go out and create opportunities rather than waiting for leads to come to you.
  • A strong communicator in writing and in person, able to adapt your approach whether you’re talking to a board director, a site manager or a pub landlord.
  • Organised and disciplined, keeping your pipeline, CRM and diary in order without needing to be chased.
  • Comfortable with or curious about AI-assisted prospecting and outreach tools.
  • A full UK driving licence.
