About Plowman Craven
As one of the largest measurement survey companies in the UK, Plowman Craven provides a range of services to the property, rail and infrastructure markets. Our innovation, dynamic approach and commitment to delivering a flawless service is achieved by investing in and empowering our employees to push boundaries and reach new heights. Regardless of the size or complexity of a project, our clients trust us to provide a service that goes beyond their expectations.
About the Role
We’re looking for a Business Development Lead to grow our Smart Monitoring division across the UK. You'll work on building strategic client relationships and develop opportunities across monitoring, surveying, environmental and geotechnical services. Working with our technical teams, you’ll take opportunities from initial conversations through to tender, negotiation and award.
This role would suit someone with a background in monitoring, geotechnical, surveying or infrastructure services who enjoys building client relationships and turning technical challenges into commercial opportunities.
What You'll Be Doing
- Develop and manage a qualified pipeline across monitoring, environmental, geotechnical, surveying and IoT services.
- Build senior relationships with Tier 1 contractors, consultants, asset owners, utility providers and public-sector clients across rail, highways, utilities and major civil engineering programmes.
- Identify opportunities relating to ground risk, structural movement, environmental monitoring and engineering survey, and develop commercially viable solutions with technical and operational teams.
- Grow recurring monitoring programmes covering settlement, deformation, vibration and wider asset performance.
- Lead opportunities from initial engagement through qualification, tender, negotiation and award.
- Work with the senior leadership team and technical leads on high-value tenders, frameworks, new service offerings and routes to market.
- Maintain accurate CRM records, pipeline reporting and revenue forecasts, while providing market and competitor insight.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

- A proven record of securing work with Tier 1 contractors, consultants, public-sector clients or asset owners across rail, utilities, highways or civil engineering.
- The technical credibility to work with surveyors, engineers, monitoring specialists and operational delivery teams, with knowledge of structural, settlement, deformation and movement monitoring.
