Location: Sheffield, with frequent UK travel

Ranson Barnes Recruitment is working with an established engineering business in Sheffield to recruit a Business Development Manager. The company designs and manufactures bespoke medium to heavy mechanical engineering projects and products for customers across a range of sectors.
Reporting to the Managing Director and joining the management team, you’ll help shape the sales strategy, win new business and develop existing customer relationships.
A strong mechanical engineering background, with a proven track record of winning sales within this field, is essential. You’ll need the technical understanding to discuss customer requirements confidently and work with colleagues to develop practical, commercially viable proposals.
The Role
- Develop and deliver a sales plan with clear targets for profitable growth.
- Identify prospective customers, generate leads and secure opportunities through proactive calls, meetings and field prospecting.
- Build strong relationships with existing customers and identify opportunities to grow their accounts.
- Understand customers’ technical requirements and work with the internal sales team to prepare detailed proposals and quotations.
- Define the scope of proposed work clearly, protecting margins and ensuring customer expectations can be met.
- Manage enquiries, tenders and quotations through to a decision, addressing objections and reviewing why business is won or lost.
- Research new markets and competitor activity to identify opportunities for growth.
- Maintain accurate CRM records and provide monthly reporting on sales activity, pipeline and performance.
- Represent the business at customer meetings, exhibitions and relevant industry events.

About You
You’ll be a technically minded sales professional who understands mechanical engineering and enjoys developing new business.
We’re Looking For
- Proven business development or technical sales experience within mechanical engineering.
- A track record of generating leads, winning new customers and achieving sales targets.
- Experience selling bespoke engineering solutions or high value contracts.
- The ability to understand technical requirements and explain the value of a proposed solution.
- Strong relationship building, presentation and organisational skills.
- Confidence dealing with customers and decision makers at different levels.
- A collaborative approach and the ability to work closely with internal colleagues.
- A clean UK driving licence and willingness to travel frequently throughout the UK.
- A mechanical engineering qualification would be advantageous.
