Purpose of the Role

The Business Development Manager will be responsible for identifying, developing and securing profitable new business opportunities across McAllister's operations in the UK and Ireland.

The role will have a particular focus on the Water, Rail and Civil Engineering sectors, while maintaining a broader remit to identify opportunities across McAllister and the wider Vortex portfolio of products and services.

The role will build strategic relationships with asset owners, framework contractors, tier-one contractors, consultants and supply chain partners, developing opportunities from initial engagement through to contract award and supporting sustainable revenue and margin growth.

Key Responsibilities

Business Development & Growth

  • Identify, develop and secure new business opportunities across McAllister's products and services.
  • Develop and maintain a strong pipeline of short, medium and long-term commercial opportunities.
  • Identify opportunities to introduce the wider Vortex portfolio to existing and prospective customers.
  • Develop new customer relationships and expand McAllister's presence within existing accounts and markets.
  • Identify high-value and high-margin project opportunities and lead early engagement with customers.
  • Work closely with Operations, Commercial, Estimating and Technical teams to ensure opportunities are commercially and operationally viable.
  • Maintain visibility of market activity, competitor developments and emerging opportunities.

  • Develop strong, long-term relationships with key customers, contractors and industry stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively with the wider Commercial and Operational teams to maximise cross-selling opportunities.
  • Represent McAllister at customer meetings, industry events and relevant networking opportunities.
  • Ensure opportunities and customer activity are appropriately recorded and reported through agreed business systems.

Water

  • Develop relationships with major framework contractors operating across the UK and Ireland water sector.
  • Build relationships with water utility companies, asset owners and key stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities across existing and emerging water frameworks and capital programmes.
  • Develop relationships with drainage contractors and specialist supply chain partners.
  • Promote McAllister and Vortex products and specialist services across the sector.
  • Identify strategic, large-scale and high-margin project opportunities.

Rail

  • Develop relationships with Network Rail, other rail asset owners and key industry stakeholders.
  • Build strong commercial relationships with tier-one rail contractors and their supply chains.
  • Identify opportunities within infrastructure maintenance, renewals and enhancement programmes.
  • Position McAllister/Vortex as a preferred supplier and delivery partner within the rail sector.
  • Develop opportunities for both specialist services and product sales.

Civil Engineering & Infrastructure

  • Develop relationships with major civil engineering and infrastructure contractors.
  • Identify opportunities across infrastructure, highways, utilities and environmental projects.
  • Promote McAllister's capabilities and the wider Vortex product and service offering.
  • Build and maintain opportunities from early customer engagement through to tender and contract award.

Skills & Experience

  • Proven business development experience within infrastructure, utilities, water, rail, civil engineering or a related sector.
  • Strong existing network across contractors, consultants, asset owners and/or infrastructure clients.
  • Demonstrable track record of identifying, developing and converting commercial opportunities.
  • Strong commercial awareness with an understanding of revenue, margin and profitability.
  • Excellent relationship-building, influencing, negotiation and communication skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively with senior customer and internal stakeholders.
  • Experience managing long-term sales pipelines and strategic accounts.
  • Self-motivated, commercially driven and comfortable working autonomously across the UK and Ireland.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with operational, commercial and technical teams.
