Its services cover a wide range of technical areas, including insulation design, thermal modelling, U-value and heat loss calculations, ventilation strategies, and renewable technologies such as Solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps. StepSoft Ltd’s experienced technical team partners closely with clients from planning to completion, delivering accurate designs, rapid turnaround, and practical solutions that improve compliance and reduce project delays. Role Description

The Business Development Manager will work on-site in Oldham in a full-time capacity or can handle tasks remotely, driving growth by identifying, developing, and managing new and existing client relationships within the retrofit and energy efficiency sector. Day-to-day responsibilities include prospecting and qualifying leads, conducting meetings and presentations with installers, contractors, housing associations, local authorities, and energy companies, and preparing tailored proposals and quotations. The role involves collaborating with the technical team to understand service capabilities, aligning client needs with StepSoft’s offerings, and supporting the bidding and tendering process for key frameworks and projects. The Business Development Manager will monitor market trends, competitor activity, and policy developments related to PAS 2035 and energy efficiency schemes, using this insight to shape sales strategies and commercial opportunities. Additional tasks include maintaining accurate CRM records, reporting on sales performance, contributing to marketing initiatives, and representing the company at industry events and networking opportunities.


Qualifications

  • Strong business development, sales, and account management skills, with experience in building and maintaining long-term client relationships.
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency, construction, retrofit, or building services sectors, ideally with familiarity with PAS 2035 and schemes such as ECO4, GBIS, and SHDF.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical services in clear, accessible language to diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in using CRM systems, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and basic data analysis tools to manage pipelines and report performance.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple opportunities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative mindset, with the ability to work effectively with technical, operational, and leadership teams to deliver coordinated client solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and approach potential clients, including retrofit installers, contractors, managing agents, housing associations, local authorities, energy companies and funding-delivery partners.
  • Introduce STEPSOFT’s retrofit assessment, design, coordination, technical monitoring, thermal calculation, audit-support and compliance services to relevant organisations.
  • Generate qualified leads through telephone calls, emails, LinkedIn, networking events, referrals and industry research.
  • Build, maintain and develop long-term relationships with existing and prospective clients.
  • Arrange introductory meetings, presentations and service discussions with potential clients.
  • Understand client requirements and work with the Director and technical team to prepare suitable service proposals.
  • Support the preparation of quotations, tenders, framework applications, capability statements and contract submissions.
  • Assist the company in securing new projects, service agreements, subcontracting opportunities and long-term commercial contracts.
  • Maintain an organised lead-management system and ensure all enquiries, communications, follow-ups and opportunities are accurately recorded.
  • Manage the sales pipeline from initial contact through to proposal, negotiation, contract award and client onboarding.
  • Follow up outstanding quotations and maintain regular communication with prospective clients.
  • Allocate agreed business-development and client-support tasks to relevant team members and monitor their completion.
  • Coordinate with retrofit coordinators, designers, assessors, technical staff and administrative personnel to ensure client requirements are communicated clearly.
  • Organise the company’s social-media content plan in collaboration with the Social Media Manager.
  • Identify suitable project updates, technical services, company achievements and industry developments for promotion.
  • Support the development of the STEPSOFT brand and strengthen the company’s reputation within the UK retrofit and energy-efficiency industry.
  • Represent the company professionally at meetings, conferences, exhibitions and networking events where required.
  • Monitor developments in ECO, Warm Homes, PAS 2035, TrustMark, social housing and wider retrofit markets to identify new opportunities.
  • Provide regular reports covering leads generated, meetings arranged, proposals submitted, contracts secured and pipeline progress.
  • Maintain professional standards, commercial confidentiality and compliance with company data-protection procedures.

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience in business development, sales, account management or relationship management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
