Business Development Manager

Birmingham, Hybrid - Office based
£42,842 per annum

Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Contract: Permanent

Help us grow the services that improve mental health across Birmingham.

Birmingham Mind is the largest independent mental health charity in Birmingham. Since 1962, we have supported people across the city through high quality, person-centred mental health services. Our vision is Better Mental Health for All, and our values shape how we work: we celebrate people, we are better together, we inspire hope, we champion change and we bridge the gap.

We are looking for a passionate, commercially aware and values-led Business Development Manager to help us secure new opportunities, retain important contracts and grow the reach and impact of our fundraising and external training. This is an exciting role for someone who can combine strong bid writing experience and partnership development skills with a genuine commitment to improving mental health support for people and communities.

About the Role

As Business Development Manager, you will play a central role in shaping Birmingham Mind’s future growth. You will lead the development of high-quality bids, tenders and grant applications, manage our bid pipeline and bid library, and help us build strong relationships with commissioners, funders and partners across the NHS, Local Authority, VCFSE sector and wider community.

You will line manage our Fundraising Lead and Training Manager, supporting both functions to deliver their strategies and grow income in a way that is ambitious, sustainable and aligned with Birmingham Mind’s values. You will also work closely with the Director of Development & Partnerships on strategic projects, large tenders and partnership opportunities.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

This is a varied and influential role for someone who enjoys turning ideas into strong proposals, building trusted relationships, and using evidence, insight and creativity to develop services that meet real community need.

About You

You will bring strong experience in business development, bid writing, statutory funding, grant applications, contract retention or income generation. You may have worked in a charity, public sector, health, social care, mental health, housing, community or social purpose setting, and you will understand how to build effective partnerships that lead to meaningful change.

We are particularly interested in hearing from people who have experience of bid writing, NHS or Local Authority partnership working, and an understanding of commercial or community fundraising or income generation roles within charities. You will be confident managing deadlines, developing persuasive written submissions, interpreting information, and working with a range of stakeholders to turn opportunities into practical, funded services.

Just as importantly, you will be motivated by Birmingham Mind’s purpose. You will be someone who can think strategically, act with integrity, support others to succeed, and stay focused on the difference our work makes to people experiencing mental health difficulties.
