Role Purpose

The Business Development Manager – Rental & Power Solutions will be responsible for driving profitable sales growth within Woodlands Power's Rental business.

The primary focus of the role is to generate new business, develop existing customers, identify rental opportunities, manage the sales process, and convert opportunities into profitable revenue.

This is a hands-on senior sales position. The successful candidate will be expected to spend significant time in the market meeting customers, developing relationships, identifying opportunities, undertaking site visits, preparing solutions, negotiating commercial terms, and closing business.

Alongside the direct sales responsibility, the role will also contribute a higher level of commercial and market insight, using the individual's experience within the power generation industry to identify new sectors, customers, and opportunities for Woodlands Power.

The role will primarily focus on Rental, whilst actively identifying opportunities for the wider Projects and Service businesses.

Key Sales Responsibilities

New Business Development

  • Proactively identify, target, and win new rental customers.
  • Generate new business through personal prospecting, networking, referrals, existing relationships, and market activity.
  • Develop relationships with decision-makers within target organisations.
  • Identify customers with recurring or long-term temporary power requirements.
  • Target sectors where Woodlands Power can achieve sustainable and profitable growth.
  • Arrange and undertake regular customer meetings and site visits.
  • Develop new accounts from initial contact through to first order and beyond.
  • Build a strong portfolio of new and existing rental customers.

Rental Sales

  • Own the sales process from initial enquiry through to order.
  • Understand customer requirements and develop appropriate temporary power solutions.
  • Undertake site surveys and assess technical requirements where required.
  • Prepare and present commercial proposals and quotations.
  • Negotiate pricing and commercial terms within agreed authority.
  • Convert opportunities into profitable rental contracts.
  • Identify opportunities for longer-term hire and repeat business.
  • Develop customers beyond one-off transactions into long-term commercial relationships.
  • Work closely with the Hire Desk and Operations teams to ensure that sold solutions can be delivered effectively.

Specialist Equipment & Product Focus

A key responsibility of the role will be to actively develop sales and rental opportunities around Woodlands Power's existing specialist equipment fleet, ensuring that the investment already made in this equipment is commercially utilised.

Particular focus will be placed on:

  • Stage V generators – actively identifying customers, sectors, and applications where Stage V compliant temporary power solutions are required.
  • BESS / Battery Energy Storage Systems – developing the BESS proposition and identifying opportunities where battery storage can provide customers with a more efficient, flexible, or commercially attractive power solution, either independently or alongside generator systems.
  • Loadbanks – developing the market for Woodlands Power's loadbank equipment, targeting customers requiring testing, commissioning, proving, and temporary load solutions.
  • Hybrid power solutions – identifying opportunities to combine generators, BESS, and other temporary power technologies to provide customers with more efficient and commercially attractive solutions.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

The successful candidate will be expected to take ownership of developing the market for these products, rather than relying solely on inbound enquiries. This will include identifying target sectors and customers, developing appropriate sales propositions, generating new opportunities, and building a pipeline specifically around these assets.

The role will also require the individual to work closely with the Hire Desk, Operations, Projects, and Service teams to ensure that the equipment is effectively positioned, priced, sold, and supported.

A key measure of success will be the increased utilisation and revenue generated from these existing assets, turning under-utilised equipment into profitable rental and sales opportunities.

The individual will also be expected to identify emerging applications and new markets for these technologies and provide feedback to the Sales Director and senior management on how Woodlands Power can maximise the commercial return from its equipment investment.

Account Management & Customer Growth

  • Manage and develop a portfolio of strategically important rental customers.
  • Build strong relationships with customers at multiple levels.
  • Understand customers' businesses, future requirements, and purchasing plans.
  • Identify opportunities to increase Woodlands Power's share of customer spend.
  • Develop repeat and long-term rental business.
  • Maintain regular contact with key accounts rather than relying solely on inbound enquiries.
  • Identify forthcoming projects, shutdowns, maintenance programmes, and temporary power requirements.
  • Protect and grow existing revenue while continually developing new business.

Sales Pipeline & Forecasting

The Business Development Manager will have direct responsibility for maintaining a healthy and accurate sales pipeline.

This includes:

  • Maintaining accurate opportunities within Syrinx/CRM.
  • Ensuring all opportunities have realistic values, dates, and probabilities.
  • Producing accurate monthly and quarterly sales forecasts.
  • Managing opportunities through each stage of the sales process.
  • Identifying opportunities at risk of being lost and taking corrective action.
  • Ensuring sufficient new opportunities are continually being generated.
  • Taking ownership of the conversion of enquiries into profitable orders.
  • Reporting pipeline, sales activity, opportunities, and risks to the Sales Director.

Market Development & Commercial Strategy

Whilst this is primarily a sales position, the successful candidate will be expected to bring a higher level of commercial thinking and industry experience to the role.

The individual will be expected to:

  • Identify sectors with strong potential for temporary power and generator rental.
  • Recommend target customers and markets for Woodlands Power to pursue.
  • Identify emerging opportunities within the power rental market.
  • Monitor competitor activity and customer buying behaviour.
  • Use industry knowledge and customer relationships to identify opportunities before they become formal enquiries.
  • Provide feedback on market pricing and competitive positioning.
  • Identify gaps in Woodlands Power's current offering.
  • Work with the Sales Director and senior management to develop targeted sales strategies.
  • Help determine where Woodlands should focus its business development activity to achieve the greatest return.
