The Opportunity

SMUK is an established specialist in commercial vehicle safety systems and fleet technology, working with fleet operators across the UK to deliver practical, engineered solutions that improve vehicle safety, compliance, and operational performance.

We don't simply sell individual products. We work with our customers to understand the challenges they face and bring together the right combination of technology, products, installation, and support to deliver a Total Fleet Solution.

As part of our continued growth, we are looking to appoint an experienced Business Development Manager to take ownership of our North West territory and further develop SMUK's presence within the commercial fleet sector.

This is a proactive business development role for someone who enjoys creating opportunities, opening new doors, and building strong commercial relationships.

You'll be responsible for developing new business with commercial fleet operators across your region, taking opportunities from initial conversation through to solution development, quotation, negotiation, and order, while building relationships that create long-term value for both the customer and SMUK.

What You'll Be Doing

You'll take ownership of business development across your territory, with responsibility for building a strong pipeline and delivering sustainable sales growth.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Identifying, targeting, and developing new business opportunities with commercial fleet operators across the North West.
  • Building strong relationships with Fleet Managers, Transport Managers, commercial vehicle dealerships, and other key decision-makers and industry stakeholders.
  • Taking a consultative approach to understand each customer's fleet, operational, safety, and compliance requirements.
  • Promoting the breadth of SMUK's capabilities, identifying opportunities to bring together products, technology, installation, and support to deliver a Total Fleet Solution.
  • Developing customer opportunities from initial engagement through site meetings, specification, quotation, negotiation, and order.
  • Identifying opportunities to develop and grow existing customer relationships alongside new business acquisition.
  • Working collaboratively with our internal Sales, Projects, Engineering, and Operations teams to ensure proposed solutions are practical, commercially viable, and successfully delivered.
  • Maintaining a strong and well-managed sales pipeline through our CRM system.
  • Providing accurate and realistic sales forecasts and working towards agreed sales targets and objectives.
  • Developing a strong understanding of your regional market, identifying emerging opportunities, and potential customers.
  • Representing SMUK professionally at customer meetings, industry events, exhibitions, and trade shows.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You'll ideally bring:

  • A proven track record in B2B business development, field sales, or solution-based sales.
  • Demonstrable experience of identifying, developing, and converting new business opportunities.
  • A consultative approach to selling, with the ability to understand a customer's requirements and develop an appropriate solution.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Commercial confidence and the ability to negotiate effectively.
  • The ability to engage credibly with customers and decision-makers at different levels.
  • A proactive, self-motivated approach and the ability to manage a regional territory effectively.
  • Good pipeline management, CRM discipline, and forecasting skills.
  • A collaborative, team-focused approach, with a willingness to share knowledge, support colleagues, and contribute to the wider success of the Sales team.
  • A full UK driving license.

Knowledge of commercial vehicle safety systems or fleet technology would also be advantageous, as would an established network within the commercial fleet sector.

However, for the right experienced business development professional, comprehensive product and technical training will be provided.

This is a field-based role covering the North West, requiring regular travel throughout the territory to develop opportunities and meet customers.

Although you'll have responsibility for your own territory and sales performance, you'll very much be part of one Sales team. We value people who collaborate, communicate openly, and support their colleagues, recognizing that our strongest results come from working together. You'll work closely with the wider Sales team and colleagues across SMUK, sharing customer and market insight, contributing to team objectives, and playing an active part in internal sales meetings. Occasional travel elsewhere in the UK will also be required for customer meetings, exhibitions, and industry events.

We're a growing business with ambitious plans, and we're looking for someone who wants to play an active part in that growth.

If you're an experienced business development professional who enjoys opening doors, solving customer problems, and turning opportunities into long-term commercial relationships, we'd like to hear from you.
