Business Development Manager
Location: Newark

About the Role
We are looking for an ambitious and commercially focused Business Development Manager to drive new business growth across our parcel and pallet distribution services.
The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying and winning new customers, developing a strong sales pipeline, and building long-term relationships with businesses requiring reliable UK and international parcel, pallet and freight solutions.
This is a proactive, field-based sales role suited to someone who enjoys developing new opportunities, meeting customers and converting prospects into profitable, long-term accounts.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify, target and secure new parcel and pallet customers within the agreed territory and target markets.
- Generate new business through prospecting, cold calling, networking, referrals, LinkedIn and face-to-face appointments.
- Build and maintain a healthy sales pipeline to achieve agreed monthly and annual revenue and margin targets.
- Arrange and attend customer meetings to understand shipping requirements, volumes, service expectations and commercial opportunities.
- Prepare quotations, proposals, tenders and presentations tailored to customer requirements.
- Sell a range of services including UK parcels, international parcels, pallet distribution, express deliveries and associated freight solutions.
- Negotiate pricing and commercial terms while protecting company margins and profitability.
- Work closely with operations and customer service teams to ensure new accounts are onboarded successfully.
- Maintain regular contact with new customers during the early stages of the relationship to ensure service expectations are being met.
- Identify opportunities to increase revenue through additional services and increased customer volumes.
- Maintain accurate records of sales activity, opportunities, quotations and customer communications within the company CRM system.
- Monitor competitor activity and market developments and provide feedback to management.
- Produce regular sales forecasts and performance updates.
- Represent the company professionally at customer meetings, networking events and industry events.
- Ensure all new business meets agreed commercial, operational and credit requirements.

Key Performance Indicators
Performance will typically be measured against:
- New business revenue generated
- Gross profit / contribution generated
- Number of new trading accounts
- Parcel and pallet volumes
- Sales appointments and opportunities created
- Pipeline value and conversion rate
- Customer retention following onboarding
- Achievement of monthly and annual sales targets
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Proven experience in B2B sales or business development.
- Strong new-business prospecting and lead-generation skills.
- Confident telephone, face-to-face and presentation skills.
- Strong negotiation and closing ability.
- Commercially aware with a good understanding of pricing and profitability.
- Self-motivated and comfortable working towards demanding sales targets.
- Excellent relationship-building and communication skills.
- Organised approach to pipeline and territory management.
- Competent using CRM systems, Microsoft Office and related sales tools.
- Full UK driving licence.

Desirable:
- Previous experience within parcels, pallets, courier, freight, transport or logistics.
- Existing knowledge of UK parcel and pallet distribution networks.
- Experience selling domestic and international transport solutions.
- Existing network of contacts within relevant sectors such as e-commerce, manufacturing, wholesale, retail and distribution.
