About the Role
This is a commercially focused, customer-facing role with full responsibility for the acquisition and development of new client accounts across the UK & Ireland. The Business Development Manager (BDM) will build and manage a personal portfolio of new customers, with a clear focus on strategically targeted customers — including all Maersk integrated products; E-Commerce, Ocean, Air, LCL and broader Logistics & Services.
Operating on a national basis, the BDM will play an active role in identifying, qualifying and pursuing new business opportunities — transforming market opportunities into long-term commercial success for Maersk.

- Identify, qualify and develop new commercial opportunities nationally.
- Develop and execute complex, consultative solutions that address identified customer pain points, collaborating with product owners to meet customer expectations.
- Ensure that all contracts, agreements and SOPs for customers within the portfolio comply with Maersk guidelines, are comprehensively documented and communicated to relevant Maersk L&S parties.
Pipeline & Commercial Strategy
- Build and manage a high-quality pipeline, ensuring accurate forecasting, opportunity tracking and a sufficiently robust CRM Open Sales Pipeline to deliver Closed Won targets.
- Create and maintain customer strategies with a clear focus on customer pain points and needs, aligned with Maersk products, services and predefined trade lanes.
- Manage the 'upselling' process within the assigned national territory, comprehensively pursuing non-controlled shippers and network-derived sales leads. (if assigned)
- Monitor contracted opportunities and ensure expected volumes convert into realised business, maintaining visibility of pipeline value, revenue and gross profit performance.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
