Business Development Manager
RIDGWAY RENTALS ARE LOOKING FOR A BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
Job Description
Working Pattern: 7:30am – 6:00 pm (Monday – Friday)
Salary Range: £40,000 – £50,000 plus Commission
Role Purpose
To grow the company’s hire revenue by winning new customers, deepening relationships with existing ones, and identifying new markets and opportunities. You will be the face of a business built on personal service, reliability and long-standing relationships, and will help scale it without losing the values that got it here.
Key Responsibilities
New business
- Identify, target and win new customers across construction, civils, groundworks, utilities, landscaping, agriculture and domestic/trade sectors.
- Build and maintain a pipeline of leads and tenders, and follow up on enquiries promptly.
- Prepare quotations, hire proposals and tender submissions in liaison with the operations and accounts teams.
- Attend site visits, trade shows, networking events and local business groups to raise the company’s profile.
Account management
- Develop strong, long-term relationships with existing customers, visiting them regularly to understand upcoming projects and equipment needs.
- Identify opportunities to increase hire volumes, cross-sell equipment (such as attachments, access equipment, and small tools) and secure framework or preferred supplier agreements.
- Act as an escalation point for customer queries, ensuring issues are resolved quickly and fairly.
- Work with accounts to agree credit terms and support the credit control process where needed.

Internal collaboration
- Work closely with depot, workshop, transport and hire desk teams so that customer promises can be delivered.
- Feedback customer insight to help shape fleet investment and service improvements.
- Contribute to a positive, respectful team culture, working directly with the family directors.
Person Specification
Essential
- Proven experience in business development or sales, ideally within plant hire, equipment hire, construction or a related sector.
- Good understanding of construction plant and how it is used on site.
- Strong relationship-building and negotiation skills.
- Confident communicator, comfortable with everyone from site operatives to company directors.
- Self-motivated, organised and able to manage your own diary and pipeline.
- Competent with Microsoft Office.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- Knowledge of the local construction market and existing contacts in the area.
- Experience of tendering and working with main contractors, local authorities or framework providers.
- Familiarity with hire management software.
- Relevant industry qualifications or membership (e.g. CPA, SMP, or an equivalent sales qualification).
- A sound understanding of the commercial side of hire, including utilisation, rates and damage/charge policies.
