The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Business Development Principal – Energy & Utilities to help drive Kainos' growth across the Energy and Utilities sector.

This is an exciting opportunity for a commercially focused and relationship-driven individual with a strong understanding of the Energy and Utilities market and the challenges facing regulated organisations. You will be responsible for developing strategic customer relationships, identifying and shaping new opportunities, leading complex pursuits, and delivering sustainable revenue growth.

Working closely with our pre-sales, delivery and technology teams, you will help customers solve some of their most pressing challenges through digital transformation, AI, cloud, data and managed service solutions.

This role is suited to an individual who combines strong commercial acumen, market knowledge and sector credibility with a genuine passion for helping organisations transform and modernise critical services.

What You'll Be Doing

Business Development & Growth

  • Develop and execute growth strategies across the Energy and Utilities sector.
  • Identify, qualify and progress new business opportunities aligned to Kainos' strategic objectives.
  • Build and maintain a healthy pipeline of opportunities that delivers sustainable revenue growth.
  • Lead opportunities from early engagement through qualification, proposition development, commercial negotiation and contract signature.
  • Develop account growth plans for strategic customers and target organisations.

Customer Engagement & Relationship Management

  • Build trusted relationships with senior business, operational and technology stakeholders.
  • Understand customer priorities, challenges and strategic objectives.
  • Position Kainos as a trusted transformation partner capable of delivering meaningful business outcomes.
  • Engage confidently with executive-level stakeholders and support the development of long-term strategic partnerships.

Opportunity Shaping & Bid Leadership

  • Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary pursuit teams across sales, consulting, delivery and technology functions.
  • Shape compelling customer propositions and commercial solutions.
  • Support major bids, framework opportunities and competitive procurements.
  • Ensure proposed solutions align to customer needs and Kainos' strategic goals.

Market Development

  • Contribute to the development of sector-specific go-to-market strategies.
  • Support the evolution of Energy and Utilities propositions and offerings.
  • Build and maintain an active network within the Energy and Utilities community.
  • Represent Kainos at relevant industry events, customer engagements and partner activities.
  • Keep abreast of market trends, emerging technologies and regulatory developments.

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Work collaboratively across Kainos business units to maximise customer value and growth opportunities.
  • Share market insights, customer intelligence and best practice across the wider organisation.
  • Support and mentor colleagues, helping to develop business development capability within the wider team.
  • Contribute positively to Kainos' collaborative and people-first culture.

Essential Requirements

  • Demonstrable experience delivering business development, account growth or strategic sales within the Energy and Utilities sector.
  • Strong knowledge of the UK Energy and Utilities market, including key industry challenges, drivers and regulatory considerations.
  • Proven track record of originating, shaping and winning complex digital transformation opportunities.
  • Experience leading opportunities with annual contract values exceeding £5m.
  • Strong commercial awareness with experience of constructing and negotiating complex commercial agreements.
  • Ability to engage, influence and build credibility with senior stakeholders and executive decision-makers.
  • Experience developing and managing strategic customer relationships.
  • Strong understanding of digital transformation, cloud, data and AI-enabled business change.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to lead virtual teams and work effectively across multidisciplinary environments.
  • Strong planning, organisational and opportunity management skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively within a fast-paced and highly competitive market.

Desirable Experience

  • Existing relationships within major UK energy, utility or regulated industry organisations.
  • Experience working with electricity, gas, water or environmental services providers.
  • Experience working with regulators, infrastructure operators or critical national infrastructure organisations.
  • Experience of large-scale transformation programmes.
  • Experience developing opportunities alongside technology partners such as Microsoft, AWS and other ecosystem partners.
