Business Intelligence Developer
Location: Devon
Working pattern: Three days in the office and two days from home
An established business is seeking a Business Intelligence Developer to help develop its data capabilities and make reliable, meaningful information central to business decisions.
This is a varied role covering the full data process, from integrating information across different systems and developing data pipelines to building models, analysing performance and delivering Power BI reporting.
The existing environment uses Python, Microsoft SQL Server and Power BI. As the business’s requirements grow, the successful candidate will help assess this setup, recommend improvements and contribute to decisions about future platforms and technologies.
Working within a team of two and reporting to the Business Information Manager, you will combine practical development with the opportunity to influence how the business collects, manages and uses data. This work will also support the foundations for its wider AI ambitions.
The role
- Develop, maintain and improve data pipelines using Python and SQL Server, bringing together information from databases, files and APIs.
- Build reliable data transformations and models that support reporting, analysis and wider business requirements.
- Create and maintain Power BI dashboards, semantic models and DAX calculations that provide clear, actionable information.
- Work directly with stakeholders to understand their questions and translate business needs into practical data solutions.
- Investigate discrepancies, improve data quality and introduce appropriate validation, logging and monitoring.
- Improve the performance, reliability and maintainability of existing pipelines, models and reports.
- Contribute to consistent definitions of business measures and reporting standards.
- Help strengthen development practices, including source control, testing, documentation, peer review and structured deployment.
- Evaluate potential platforms and approaches, explaining their strengths and limitations in relation to cost, scalability, maintenance and business value.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Experience within an established data environment is particularly valuable. This could include exposure to Microsoft Fabric, Snowflake, Databricks, Azure, AWS or similar technologies. No single platform background is preferred; the ability to explain different approaches and apply that knowledge practically is what matters.
Who this would suit
This role would suit a developer with solid commercial experience who enjoys working across different parts of the data process and wants greater involvement in technical decisions.
You should be comfortable sharing recommendations, discussing alternatives and working collaboratively to find solutions that meet the business’s needs. Previous team management experience is not required.
There is scope to shape the balance of responsibilities around your strengths while contributing across the wider data environment.
The opportunity
You will join at an early stage of the business’s data development, with the opportunity to influence platform choices, introduce better ways of working and see the impact of your contribution across the organisation.
