THE OPPORTUNITY
A Business Rates Director opportunity has arisen in Birmingham, paying up to £110,000 plus bonus. I'm running a confidential retained search on behalf of one of the most recognised names in real estate advisory, for a business rates team that sits inside a truly mega platform, with a client base and pipeline that few firms outside the very top tier can offer.
If you're currently working at Associate Director or Director level within business rates and want a role where you can genuinely shape the direction of a team, this is worth a conversation.
THE ROLE

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You'll take a lead role advising on business rates across a broad range of commercial property types, working with occupiers, landlords and investors on rating liability, appeals, empty rates mitigation and strategic advice around the rating list. There's a strong existing client base to work from, alongside real scope to develop new instructions and grow the team's presence across the Midlands. You'll also play a part in mentoring and developing more junior surveyors coming through, so this isn't just a technical role, it comes with genuine people leadership attached.

- MRICS qualified
- Strong track record in business rates advisory
- Solid technical grounding across appeals, valuation and rating list strategy
- Comfortable operating at Director level, both client-facing and internally
