Business Risk Manager, Controls Testing Lead
Who we’re looking for
The Business Risk Manager, Controls Assurance Lead plays a critical role in supporting the effective management of non-financial risk within Schroders Wealth Management by providing oversight of first-line risk and control activities and ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory and internal policy/framework requirements.
The Business Risk Manager, Controls Assurance Lead is responsible for delivering a risk-based testing programme, identifying control weaknesses, supporting remediation activities, and providing senior management with assurance regarding the effectiveness of the control environment. The role acts as a critical component of the firm's three lines model by providing objective challenge within the First Line of Defence.
This role reports to the Global Head of Business Risk and Control and is based in London.

We moved into our new HQ in the City of London in 2018. We’re close to our clients, in the heart of the UK’s financial centre and we have everything we need to work flexibly.
What you'll do
Controls Testing Framework Ownership
- Design, implement and maintain the Front Office Controls Testing Framework.
- Develop consistent testing methodologies, standards, procedures and reporting.
- Ensure alignment with enterprise risk management frameworks and regulatory expectations.
- Maintain testing inventories and testing universe across all key business processes and control frameworks.
- Drive continuous enhancement of testing approaches through data-led and risk-based methodologies.

Annual Controls Testing Programme
- Develop and execute a global risk-based controls testing plan.
- Prioritise testing based on risk assessments, incidents, regulatory developments and emerging themes.
Control Design & Operating Effectiveness Reviews
- Assess whether key controls are appropriately designed to mitigate risks.
- Perform testing of operating effectiveness through sampling, walkthroughs and evidence reviews.
- Validate whether controls operate consistently and as intended.
- Identify control gaps, weaknesses, inefficiencies and potential regulatory breaches.
- Provide independent challenge to control owners and business management.
Assurance Reporting & Management Information
- Produce regular testing and assurance reports for senior management.
- Develop meaningful KPIs and KRIs relating to control effectiveness.
Wider Business Risk & Control Activities
- Support the wider Business Risk Management team in the execution of day-to-day risk and control activities across the Wealth Management business including issues management, horizon scanning, conducting thematic reviews etc.
- Influence business stakeholders to drive improvements in control effectiveness.
- Promote a strong risk awareness culture and accountability across the business.
- Support transformation initiatives to improve the Wealth risk operating model.
- Contribute to strengthening the overall control environment, moving from reactive to more proactive risk management.
The knowledge, experience and qualifications you need
- Extensive experience in risk, controls testing, assurance, internal audit or compliance monitoring.
- Strong understanding of Wealth Management and private banking control environments.
- Experience designing and operating controls testing programmes.
- Strong knowledge of FCA requirements, Consumer Duty and conduct risk management.
- Excellent root cause analysis and issue management skills.
- Experience presenting findings to senior management and governance committees.
- Strong analytical, reporting and data interpretation capabilities.

- Experience implementing continuous controls monitoring and automated testing in a private banking or wealth management firm.
- Experience across suitability, financial planning, investment management and financial crime.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with the ability to interpret risk data and translate into actionable insights.
- Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills, with the ability to challenge constructively.
- Motivated to shape this position due to new requirements.
- Flexible and able to cope with a changing environment.
