Overview
The Business Unit Manager - Naval Architecture will provide strategic, technical, and commercial leadership for the Naval Architecture business unit, driving the successful delivery of complex marine and offshore engineering projects while expanding the consultancy's advisory and technical consulting services. The role will lead a multidisciplinary team, oversee project delivery, develop long-term client relationships, identify new business opportunities, and provide high-value advisory consultancy services across the maritime, offshore, energy, defence, and ports sectors.
A key aspect of the role is the provision and growth of the consultancy's Expert Witness, dispute resolution, and forensic engineering services, supporting clients, legal advisers, insurers, shipowners, contractors, and developers involved in technically complex disputes, arbitration proceedings, litigation, and insurance claims. The successful candidate will act as a trusted technical adviser, delivering independent engineering opinions and supporting clients throughout dispute resolution processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the Naval Architecture Business Unit, delivering sustainable commercial growth across engineering, advisory consultancy, forensic engineering, and Expert Witness services.
- Develop the consultancy's Expert Witness and dispute resolution capability, identifying new opportunities and building long-term relationships with law firms, insurers, P&I Clubs, adjusters, owners, operators, contractors, developers, and government organisations.
- Act as an appointed Expert Witness in accordance with applicable legal and professional obligations, providing independent, impartial, and technically robust expert opinion.
- Lead forensic engineering investigations into marine casualties, vessel failures, structural damage, collisions, groundings, machinery failures, offshore incidents, construction defects, and operational failures.
- Conduct root cause investigations using recognised engineering methodologies and prepare technically rigorous reports suitable for litigation, arbitration, adjudication, mediation, and other formal dispute resolution proceedings.
- Prepare and review CPR-compliant Expert Witness reports (or equivalent international standards where applicable), joint expert statements, technical rebuttal reports, and supporting engineering evidence.
- Provide expert technical support throughout arbitration, mediation, adjudication, High Court proceedings, and international dispute resolution processes, including giving oral evidence where required.
- Advise solicitors, barristers, insurers, claims managers, P&I Clubs, and corporate clients on technical liability, causation, engineering standards, contractual issues, quantum support, and technical risk.
- Deliver independent technical reviews to support insurance claims, contractual disputes, major project claims, asset failures, warranty issues, and marine casualty investigations.
- Represent the consultancy as a recognised authority in forensic engineering and Expert Witness services through publications, conferences, legal seminars, and industry events.
- Continue to lead multidisciplinary engineering projects and provide strategic technical consultancy across the maritime, offshore, ports, defence, and renewable energy sectors.

Skills & Experience
The successful candidate will possess:
- Extensive experience in Naval Architecture within a leading engineering consultancy, marine engineering, offshore, defence, or commercial shipping environment.
- Demonstrable experience acting as, or directly supporting, an Expert Witness on technically complex engineering disputes.
- Strong understanding of litigation, arbitration, mediation, adjudication, forensic engineering methodologies, and Expert Witness duties, including the requirement to provide independent and impartial evidence.
- Experience preparing expert reports, technical evidence, joint statements, rebuttal reports, and documentation for formal legal proceedings.
- Experience supporting solicitors, barristers, insurers, P&I Clubs, loss adjusters, and claims professionals throughout dispute resolution processes.
- Excellent analytical, investigative, report-writing, presentation, and cross-examination support skills.
- Proven ability to communicate highly complex engineering matters clearly to legal professionals, tribunals, arbitrators, judges, insurers, and non-technical audiences.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Chartered Naval Architect with strong consultancy and commercial leadership experience to shape the strategic direction of the business unit while leading the delivery of complex engineering, advisory consultancy, dispute resolution, and Expert Witness assignments. Working with shipowners, offshore developers, insurers, legal advisers, contractors, investors, and government organisations, you will provide trusted technical advice on high-profile projects, major marine incidents, arbitration proceedings, and technically challenging engineering matters, while driving business growth and developing long-term client relationships.
