As part of Detection and Measurement, Enterprise Control Systems (ECS) is a leading supplier of long-range data links that support real-time high-resolution video transfer between air and ground users. In creating products like RF inhibitors and specialized equipment for military and security purposes, we protect ground forces and infrastructure around the world.

How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)

SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As a Buyer, you will work in a small Purchasing team and will be responsible for the effective procurement of electronic components, mechanical items, goods, materials and services, and any other items or services as required by the business.

What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)

While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:

  • Obtaining quotations and placing Purchase Orders in accordance with business processes and requirements
  • Day-to-day management of suppliers and the open Purchase Order book, managing on-time delivery by expediting of orders to contracted delivery dates and to need-by dates
  • Issuing Requests for quotation
  • Negotiation of price and lead time with suppliers
  • Working with suppliers and internal functions to resolve ordering queries
  • Working with the quality team to resolve quality issues with suppliers
  • Maintenance of Approved Supplier List and supplier reviews
  • Resolve delivery and invoicing queries
  • Maintain accurate purchasing data within ERP systems, including purchase order dates, pricing, supplier confirmations, acknowledgements, and delivery updates
  • Monitor supplier performance, escalate risks to delivery, quality, cost, or service levels, and support corrective actions where required
  • Support inventory control by reviewing material availability, shortages, excess stock, and supplier lead times to help maintain production continuity
  • Work closely with Planning, Production, Engineering, Quality, and Finance teams to align purchasing activity with business priorities and customer requirements
  • Ensure purchasing activities are completed in line with company policies, approval requirements, delegated authority limits, and compliance standards
  • Identify opportunities to reduce cost, improve supplier lead times, improve purchase order accuracy, and support continuous improvement within the purchasing function

What we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education)

We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:

Required Experience

  • Minimum 1 year's experience within procurement, supply chain, or with relevant skills
  • Basic negotiation and commercial awareness
  • Process-driven with working knowledge of the administration of Purchase Orders, purchasing processes, and related activities
  • Self-motivated and able to work and make decisions under pressure with tight timeframes
  • Flexible to adapt to changing situations and environments
  • Confident communicator (written, verbal, face-to-face, and by telephone)
  • Numerate with analytical skills
  • Able to identify opportunities for savings
  • Intermediate MS Office Skills

  • Experience of working in a manufacturing/engineering environment with experience of electronic components, assemblies, and mechanical/machined parts
  • Organised and have good attention to detail
  • Continuous Improvement activities and methodologies
  • Ability to identify and manage problems and risks
  • Analytical with an enquiring mind
  • Willing to undertake a variety of tasks from the transactional to the complex with multiple dependencies
  • Able to build good relationships and attend and host supplier and internal meetings
  • A desire to develop knowledge and skills in procurement and supply
  • Flexible and supportive approach

Education & Certifications

  • CIPS Qualifications or equivalent desirable
  • GCSE level minimum

Travel & Working Environment

  • Hybrid (Currently 3 days on site)
  • Visits to suppliers as required
