Role: Buyer

  • Salary Range: £38,000 - £40,000 PA (DOE)
  • Job Type: Permanent/37.5 hours a week
  • Location: Burton Upon Trent (On-site)

Overview

This is a key role responsible for:

  • Sourcing, selecting, and purchasing goods or services
  • Ensuring material availability
  • Requires strong sourcing, negotiation, and communication skills at all levels of the business—both internally and externally

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities (Essential Job Functions):

  • Sourcing and Selection
    • Researching and identifying reliable suppliers, manufacturers, and wholesalers
  • Contract Negotiation
    • Negotiating product prices, quantities, delivery timescales, exclusivity arrangements, and product consolidation to secure maximum ROI
  • Supplier Relationships
    • Managing supplier performance and quality
  • Order Book Management
    • Maintaining the MRP system
  • Inventory Management
    • Processing purchase orders (POs)
    • Updating stock management databases
    • Tracking deliveries
  • Trend Analysis
    • Reviewing historical sales data and forecasting customer demand or upcoming industry trends
  • Quality Assurance
    • Evaluating supplier reliability
    • Checking the quality of received stock
    • Resolving billing or shipping discrepancies
  • Cross-Department Collaboration
    • Working with production, planning, logistics, commercial, marketing teams, and warehouse operations to assist with projects, products, and services
  • General Ad Hoc Duties

Requirements

Experience & Education:

  • MRP System Experience:
    • Experience using an MRP system, ideally JDE.
  • Manufacturing Background:
    • Desireable in a FMCG environment (preferably)
  • Negotiation Skills:
    • Strong negotiation abilities
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in MS Office and Excel
  • Supplier Management:
    • Aptitude to manage a varied supplier base
  • Technical Ability:
    • Ability to read and understand drawings is desirable
  • Contract Management:
    • Knowledge of contract negotiation
  • Cost Savings:
    • Evidence of supplier consolidation and cost savings delivery
  • Certifications:
    • CIPS or equivalent would be advantageous
  • Administrative Skills:
    • Strong administrative abilities

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Cost Savings vs. Budget:
    • Total capital saved through contract re-negotiations and strategic bulk purchasing
  • Supplier OTIF (On-Time In-Full):
    • Percentage of vendor shipments arriving precisely within the agreed delivery window and quality standards
  • Inventory Turnover Ratio:
    • How frequently purchased stock is sold and replaced over a set financial period
  • GMROI (Gross Margin Return on Investment):
    • Financial return generated for every pound invested in inventory assets
