C# Developer
Location: Stevenage, Hertfordshire
Salary: £35,000 - £50,000 per annum
Working pattern: Hybrid - 3 days in the office, 2 days from home
Job type: Permanent
About the role
Are you a C#/.NET developer who enjoys solving technical problems, working with data and supporting real-world applications?
I'm looking for a C# Developer to join a small, growing technical team in Stevenage. It's a varied role combining C# development, application support, testing and client-facing technical problem solving.
You won't be spending your days building front-end applications. Instead, you'll work across data-driven solutions, client requirements, troubleshooting, testing and production requests, as well as developing new tools and functionality.
The role would suit someone who enjoys variety, takes ownership of technical problems and wants to see the direct impact of their work.
What you'll be doing
- Develop and maintain applications and solutions using C#/.NET
- Investigate and resolve technical issues through the application support helpdesk
- Work on client production requests and support the regular processing of data
- Test software, investigate bugs and help ensure solutions are reliable before release
- Work with clients and third-party suppliers to resolve technical issues and deliver projects
- Work with XML to process and manipulate data
- Use SQL Server to investigate data, understand relationships and write basic queries
- Build and maintain new tools and functionality based on client requirements

What I'm looking for
Essential
- Good commercial experience developing with C#/.NET
- Strong understanding of programming fundamentals and solving data-driven problems
- Experience working with XML
- Working knowledge of SQL Server, including tables, relationships and basic queries
- Previous experience providing technical or application support to clients
- Experience troubleshooting technical issues and working to deadlines
- A methodical approach to testing and problem solving, with strong attention to detail
- Good communication skills and the ability to work directly with clients and suppliers
- Comfortable interpreting and validating technical information and data
Desirable
- Experience with one or more of the following would be useful:
- XSL-FO
- NoSQL
- Data integration involving XML, XPath, CSV or positional files
- JSON
- ASP.NET MVC
- Blazor
- .NET Core
- Service layers
- REST APIs
- PDF layout / typography
- LINQ to XML
- Large-scale data processing systems
- Software development or testing methodologies
You don't need to have every desirable skill. I'm more interested in someone with a strong C#/.NET foundation, good problem-solving ability and a willingness to learn new technologies.

The person I'm looking for
This role would suit a developer who enjoys more than just writing code.
You'll be someone who likes understanding why something isn't working, investigating the underlying data, finding a solution and seeing it through to completion.
You'll be comfortable switching between development, testing, support and client conversations, and happy working as part of a small team where everyone has a voice.
If you're looking for a pure front-end or full-stack development role where most of your time is spent building new UI features, this probably won't be the right fit.
