About The Role
We are seeking a talented Software Engineer to join Leonardo’s dynamic team working on some of the most advanced defence and aerospace projects in the UK. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the enhancement of fast jet capabilities, including platforms such as the Eurofighter Typhoon, Saab Gripen, and the emerging 6th generation fighter jet platform, Tempest. As part of a collaborative, agile environment, you will work alongside a team of engineers dedicated to developing innovative software solutions that underpin the nation's air defence systems for decades to come.
In this position, you will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software components that are critical to the operational effectiveness of cutting-edge aerospace technology. You will participate in planning and architectural discussions, ensuring that software solutions meet stringent regulatory and safety standards. Your work will directly impact the performance, reliability, and security of complex defence systems, making this a highly rewarding and impactful role.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in software development, particularly within regulated or high-stakes environments. Relevant qualifications include a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline. Candidates should demonstrate experience with agile development methodologies and possess excellent programming skills in C++. Familiarity with version control systems such as Git is essential. Experience working on embedded systems, signal processing, or complex codebases will be advantageous.
Additional desirable skills include knowledge of static analysis tools, code coverage methodologies, and component-based development. Familiarity with tools like CMake, Atlassian suite, and experience in using debuggers to trace and resolve issues will set candidates apart. A proactive attitude, willingness to learn, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team are critical attributes for success in this role.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain high-quality software components in C++ for aerospace and defence applications.
- Participate actively in agile team activities, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives.
- Contribute to system architecture discussions and provide innovative solutions to complex technical challenges.
- Implement and execute comprehensive testing strategies to ensure software reliability and compliance with safety standards.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate software with hardware and other system components.
- Trace, diagnose, and resolve software issues using debugging tools and techniques.
- Maintain clear, comprehensive documentation for all development activities.
- Stay updated with industry best practices and emerging technologies relevant to aerospace software development.
