Role: Cable Systems Engineering Manager
Location: Scotland (Hybrid working is available, with occasional travel to manufacturing facilities, suppliers and project/construction sites)
Employment: Full-time permanent role
Turner Lovell are recruiting on behalf of a well-established global power cable and transmission technology business that is expanding its engineering and EPC capabilities in the UK and Europe.
About the Role
The role is focused on engineering management, design assurance and technical governance, rather than acting as the detailed design engineer.
As Cable Systems Engineering Manager, you will provide engineering leadership and governance across major cable projects, ensuring that design activities are properly planned, coordinated, reviewed and delivered in line with project, contractual and technical requirements. You will work across multiple engineering disciplines and interfaces, collaborating with project teams, cable specialists, manufacturing, installation teams, suppliers, subcontractors and clients.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead the planning, coordination and management of engineering activities across major cable projects.
- Develop and maintain project engineering and design management processes, plans and procedures.
- Ensure engineering deliverables meet contractual, technical, regulatory and project requirements.
- Manage design reviews, technical assurance, verification and validation activities.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering reviews and ensure technical actions are followed through to completion.
- Manage engineering risks, design changes, technical queries, deviations and concessions.
- Ensure design risks and assumptions are identified, assessed and effectively communicated throughout the project lifecycle.
- Manage technical interfaces between cable systems, civil works, HDD, substations/converter stations, manufacturing, installation, testing and commissioning.
- Coordinate engineering interfaces between clients, suppliers, subcontractors and other project partners.
- Monitor engineering progress, design maturity, deliverables and technical issues against the project programme.
- Identify engineering issues that could impact project cost, schedule, procurement, manufacturing or installation.
- Provide clear engineering reporting to project and senior management.
- Oversee engineering activities associated with subcontractors and external design organisations.
- Support cable testing, qualification and certification activities, including coordination with relevant technical specialists and testing organisations.
- Provide engineering oversight through design, manufacturing, installation and commissioning.
- Support the development and mentoring of engineering and design management teams.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering management systems, processes and standards.
- Increasingly support tendering and business development, including technical proposals, engineering strategies, resource planning, estimates and engineering risk assessments.

Key Requirements
- Chartered Engineer status or equivalent professional qualification.
- Significant engineering management experience within major EPC, transmission, offshore wind or comparable infrastructure projects (obtained from the EPC contractor, cable manufacturer, transmission owner or major infrastructure developer).
- Strong understanding of HVAC and/or HVDC cable systems.
- Knowledge of IEC, CIGRE and relevant cable/transmission standards.
- Knowledge of CDM 2015 and design risk management.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams and technical interfaces.
- Strong understanding of cable system engineering, including design, manufacturing, installation and commissioning.
- Experience with design reviews, technical assurance, verification and validation.
- Proven experience managing engineering risk and design change.
- Good understanding of requirements management and technical compliance.
- Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to establish structure, processes and governance within a developing project organisation.
- Good commercial awareness and understanding of project delivery.
- Experience working within formal technical authority or design assurance frameworks.
- Experience contributing to tenders and technical bid development.
- Experience working with UK National Grid is advantageous.
