Role Overview
The CAD Engineer reports to the Head of Support Engineering and plays a key role in delivering high-quality CAD services across the business. Working closely with Operations, Project Management, Engineering, and external stakeholders, the position supports the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of engineering documentation for Colt DCS data centres.
The role provides technical CAD support across both mechanical and electrical infrastructure, contributing to operational activities, project delivery, incident investigations, problem management, capacity planning, and infrastructure enhancement initiatives. The CAD Engineer will ensure engineering documentation remains accurate, compliant, and aligned with company standards, supporting safe and efficient operations across the data centre estate.
In addition, the role supports feasibility studies, engineering design development, and the technical delivery of projects within the Support Engineering function, acting as a key interface between Design, Engineering, Operations, Project Teams, and external suppliers.
Key Responsibilities
CAD Design & Engineering Support
- Produce accurate 2D and 3D engineering drawings and models using AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks, Inventor, or equivalent CAD software.
- Support the development and coordination of electrical and mechanical design deliverables for data centre infrastructure projects.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate designs across electrical, mechanical, civil, structural, and architectural disciplines.
- Ensure all drawings and engineering documentation comply with company standards, client requirements, and industry best practices.
- Maintain accurate revision control and document management processes.
Engineering Documentation
- Prepare, develop, maintain, and update the following documentation:
- General Arrangement (GA) drawings
- Equipment layouts
- Electrical Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
- Cable routing and containment layouts
- Mechanical services drawings
- Plant room layouts
- Asset and infrastructure records
- As-built documentation
- Engineering schematics and technical drawings

- Assist in the preparation, coordination, and maintenance of drawings and technical documentation relating to:
- Low Voltage (LV) and Medium Voltage (MV) power distribution systems
- Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems and battery installations
- Generator systems
- Switchgear and distribution boards
- Power monitoring and metering systems
- Cable containment and routing infrastructure
- Earthing and lightning protection systems
Mechanical Infrastructure Support
- Assist in the preparation, coordination, and maintenance of drawings and technical documentation relating to:
- Chilled water systems
- CRAH (Computer Room Air Handling) units
- CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioning) units
- Air-cooled and water-cooled plant
- HVAC systems
- Pipework and plant room layouts
- Cooling distribution infrastructure
- Mechanical containment systems and equipment supports
Project Delivery & Stakeholder Engagement
- Participate in design reviews and interdisciplinary coordination meetings.
- Support document control processes, drawing revisions, and engineering change management activities.
- Collaborate with engineering, construction, commissioning, project management, and operations teams throughout project lifecycles.
- Update engineering documentation following site surveys, redline mark-ups, commissioning activities, and stakeholder feedback.
- Support troubleshooting, incident investigations, and problem management activities where engineering documentation is required.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing engineering standards, documentation quality, and operational efficiency.
Compliance, Safety & Governance
- Ensure all work activities are carried out in accordance with:
- Health and Safety legislation
- Environmental and energy management regulations
- Internal engineering, operational, and design standards
- Quality assurance processes and governance requirements
- Support internal and external audits, compliance reviews, and technical assessments.
- Maintain accurate, auditable records of engineering documentation, asset information, and operational data.
- Promote a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

Essential Skills & Competencies
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor, SolidWorks, or equivalent CAD software packages.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and design documentation.
- Fundamental understanding of:
- Electrical power distribution systems
- Mechanical building services
- Engineering specifications
- Bills of Materials (BOMs)
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate technical documentation.
- Effective communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Proactive, positive, and solution-oriented approach with a strong willingness to learn and develop.
Desirable Skills
- Understanding of Building Information Modelling (BIM) principles and methodologies.
- Awareness of engineering design standards and documentation best practices.
- Experience working within data centres, critical infrastructure, construction, or building services environments.
- Familiarity with engineering asset management systems and document control processes.
Qualifications
- HNC/HND, Degree, Apprenticeship, or equivalent qualification in one of the following disciplines:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Building Services Engineering
- Engineering Design
- A related engineering discipline
Experience
Essential
- Experience working within an engineering, CAD design, building services, construction, manufacturing, or technical environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multiple stakeholders to deliver engineering and technical projects.
Desirable
- 1-3 years' experience within one or more of the following sectors:
- Data centres
- Critical infrastructure
- Building services engineering
- Manufacturing
- High-availability environments
- Highly regulated industries
- Knowledge of industry standards and guidance such as:
- ASHRAE
- CIBSE
- BSRIA
- Previous hands-on experience in engineering maintenance, installation, commissioning, operations, or technical field support.
