About the Role

BESS Broadway (BB) is a global development platform acquiring and developing grid-connected BESS projects through to Ready-to-Build (RtB) across the UK, Europe, Australia and other key markets. As we scale our pipeline, we are hiring a CAD Engineer / Technician to produce and maintain the site layout and design drawings that underpin our project pipeline — from early feasibility sketches through to planning-submission and RtB ready drawing packages.

This role goes beyond drafting. You will work closely with our electrical, civil and development teams to help shape site layouts that account for equipment spacing, access, fire safety, and — critically — civil grading and drainage requirements, while also helping build the drawing standards and CAD templates that keep a fast-growing, multi-market pipeline consistent and efficient.

Key Responsibilities

Drawing Production

  • Produce accurate, detailed 2D site layouts and 3D models for BESS projects at all stages of development — concept, feasibility, planning submission, and construction-ready issue — using AutoCAD, Civil 3D and related tools.
  • Prepare full suites of planning application drawings, site plans, elevations, equipment layouts, and single-line diagram support drawings to scale.
  • Produce and maintain red-line drawings, incorporating design changes, site survey data and stakeholder feedback.
  • Create and manage CAD blocks, symbols, layers, xrefs and templates to keep drawings efficient, accurate and easy to reuse across projects.

Site Layout & Civil/Drainage Design Support

  • Develop preliminary and detailed site layouts considering equipment spacing, fire/thermal separation, access roads, laydown areas and future augmentation space.
  • Support civil design of BESS sites — grading plans, cut/fill balancing, access road layout, and foundation/pad arrangement — working alongside civil engineers and consultants.
  • Draw and update drainage and stormwater layouts — swales, attenuation/detention features, erosion & sediment control — from calculations and specifications provided by civil engineers or specialist drainage consultants, rather than originating the underlying design yourself.
  • Build and update existing/proposed surface models using survey and topographic data to support grading and drainage design led by civil engineers.
  • Flag site constraints (flood risk, ground conditions, watercourses, easements) early in the design process for review and resolution by the engineering team and external consultants.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Drawing Standards & Process

  • Support the development and continuous improvement of in-house CAD and drawing standards, templates and title blocks that can be applied consistently across UK, European and Australian projects.
  • Help standardise layer naming, drawing numbering, symbol libraries and file management conventions across the organization.
  • Maintain organized project files and drawing registers, including full revision history and issue tracking.
  • Support quality assurance/quality control checks on drawings produced internally and by external designers or consultants.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Lead Electrical Engineer and wider engineering team & consultants to ensure layouts reflect electrical equipment, cabling routes and switchgear/transformer requirements.
  • Collaborate with development and planning teams to produce drawings that meet local planning authority and permitting requirements across each market.
  • Liaise with external civil, structural and grid consultants, surveyors and contractors as designs progress from concept to construction issue.

Requirements

Experience

  • 3–5+ years' experience as a CAD Technician, CAD Engineer or Draftsperson, ideally within renewable energy, BESS, solar, substation or broader energy infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrable experience producing layout drawings for utility-scale projects (BESS, solar, or comparable infrastructure) through planning and into construction issue.
  • Exposure to civil site design elements — grading, drainage/stormwater, access roads, earthworks — either hands-on or in close support of civil engineers.
  • Experience working across more than one market/jurisdiction, or willingness and aptitude to learn UK, EU and Australian planning and drawing conventions.

Technical Skills

  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD; working knowledge of Civil 3D (grading, pipe networks/drainage design) strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with 3D modelling tools such as Revit or 3ds Max advantageous.
  • Understanding of BESS or solar equipment layout principles — spacing, fire/thermal separation, access, cable routing — and how they interact with civil constraints.
  • Basic understanding of stormwater management principles and drainage design conventions in at least one target market (UK SuDS, EU national equivalents, or Australian stormwater/drainage codes).
  • Comfortable interpreting engineering calculations, geotechnical/topographic survey data, and specifications from electrical and civil engineers.

Qualifications

  • Relevant qualification in CAD design, civil/building engineering, drafting, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Degree or HNC/HND in Civil Engineering, Building Services, or related discipline advantageous but not essential.

Other

  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy — designs feed directly into planning submissions and construction packages.
  • Strong communicator, comfortable working within a multi-disciplinary team spanning electrical, civil, planning and development.
  • Organised, process-minded, and motivated to help build standards for a growing team rather than just produce individual drawings.
  • Ability to work with a global and multi-cultural team in a fast paced environment.
  • Additional European language skills (e.g. German, Spanish, Italian) advantageous given multi-market TSO/DSO engagement.

What Success Looks Like in the First 12 Months

  • A consistent, well-documented set of CAD and drawing standards in active use across the project pipeline.
  • Site layouts that reliably account for civil and drainage constraints early, reducing rework during detailed design.
  • A well-organised drawing register and file management system supporting a growing, multi-market pipeline.
  • Strong working relationships with the electrical engineering team, civil consultants and planning teams across all active markets.

Why Join Us

  • Broaden your CAD skillset beyond drafting into layout design, civil coordination and standards-setting on a growing platform.
  • Exposure to projects across some of the most active grid-scale storage markets globally.
  • Opportunity to shape drawing standards and process from an early stage as the team scales.
  • Work closely with electrical, civil and development leads across the full project lifecycle.
