We are looking for an Calibration & Applications Engineer to join our team and take responsibility for the calibration, testing and technical support of our gas analysers, alongside a range of wider engineering and customer-facing activities.

The Role
The primary responsibility of this role is the accurate calibration and testing of gas analysers.
Working closely with our CTO, you will be responsible for taking analysers through the calibration process from start to finish, interpreting the results, identifying and resolving problems, completing the required documentation and ensuring each instrument meets the required specification before it leaves the business.
This is a hands-on technical role that requires exceptional attention to detail, concentration and accuracy, combined with the ability to work independently and take ownership of tasks.
You will be trained in AG Instruments' calibration processes and equipment, but we are looking for someone who can progressively develop the knowledge and confidence to manage calibrations independently, rather than relying on constant supervision.
The role will also involve R&D and product development work, as well as having some involvement working across assembly, testing, quality, customer support and supplier management, making this a varied position within a highly technical environment.
Key Responsibilities
Calibration & Testing (Core Responsibility)
- Independently calibrate gas analysers from initial setup through to final verification, including gas concentration, pressure, temperature, linearisation and compensation.
- Set up and operate calibration equipment, including gas switching/blending systems, mass flow controllers and automated calibration systems.
- Interpret calibration results, investigate out-of-specification results and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, software and gas supply issues.
- Carry out adjustments, repairs and repeat testing where required to ensure analysers meet specification.
- Complete test documentation, calibration certificates and maintain accurate records.

Assembly & Engineering
- Assemble, test and inspect gas analysers using detailed procedures and drawings, including precision mechanical and electrical assembly.
- Support product development and modifications, including CAD design, component sourcing and the design of calibration fixtures and equipment.
- Test and evaluate new components and designs, and develop practical solutions to technical problems.
- Write and improve technical, calibration and manufacturing procedures.
Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Work in accordance with the company's quality management system and ISO 9000 requirements.
- Maintain accurate and traceable technical and quality records and support annual audits.
- Identify and implement improvements to calibration, manufacturing, quality and engineering processes.
Customer & Applications Support
- Respond to technical customer queries and assist with troubleshooting.
- Provide online product training and demonstrations and attend occasional customer site visits and international exhibitions.
- Develop a strong understanding of how AG Instruments' analysers are used and applied in the field.
Supplier & Component Support
- Carry out incoming inspection and testing of components.
- Investigate supplier quality and performance issues and work with suppliers to resolve technical problems.
- Support sourcing and evaluation of alternative components and suppliers.
Teamwork & General Responsibilities
- Work closely with colleagues across engineering, manufacturing, sales and technical support in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Take ownership of assigned work and manage tasks through to completion with a proactive and methodical approach.
- Communicate technical issues clearly and contribute ideas for improving products, processes and working practices.

Technical Skills & Knowledge
The following would be desirable:
- Experience with gas analysis equipment and technologies.
- Understanding of infrared, electrochemical, paramagnetic or PID gas analysis.
- Knowledge of calibration principles, including:
- Linearisation
- Temperature coefficients
- Pressure coefficients
- Leak testing
- Gas concentration measurement
- Understanding of electronics and electrical systems.
- Experience working with software-controlled equipment.
- CAD experience, such as Alibre or equivalent.
- Experience with calibration equipment, gas blending, mass flow controllers or automated test systems.
- Understanding of quality management systems and ISO 9000 principles.
- Knowledge of standards relevant to our industries, such as HTM 02, NFPA 99 and CIGRE.
Full training will be provided on AG Instruments' products, calibration equipment and internal procedures. We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate the ability and enthusiasm to learn highly technical processes.
Qualifications & Experience
Ideally, candidates will have:
- A degree, Higher National Diploma (HND) or equivalent qualification in an engineering, scientific or technical discipline.
- Experience working with gas analysis, instrumentation, calibration or a related technical field.
- Professional engineering qualifications or progress towards Chartered Engineer status would be advantageous but are not essential.
For the right candidate, technical ability, attention to detail, practical problem-solving and the ability to work independently will be valued alongside formal qualifications.
