The role
As Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist within COAST, you’ll provide senior psychiatric leadership for young people experiencing acute and complex mental health difficulties. You’ll:
- Deliver specialist psychiatric assessment, formulation and treatment planning
- Provide expert input to young people receiving intensive home treatment
- Lead the management of complex presentations, including medication management
- Support access and gatekeeping assessments to help prevent avoidable admissions
- Act as Responsible Clinician under the Mental Health Act where required
- Provide consultation and advice to multidisciplinary colleagues and partner agencies
- Supervise and support non-consultant medical staff
- Contribute to clinical governance, audit, service redesign and quality improvement
- Participate in the CAMHS Consultant on-call rota, currently 1:9 with compensatory rest

You’ll provide visible clinical leadership through daily handovers, safety huddles and wider system discussions, supporting coordinated decisions for young people with complex needs.
About the service
COAST — the Crisis Outreach Acute Support Team — provides intensive home treatment and crisis support for children and young people across Sussex.
The service works closely with:
- CAMHS inpatient services
- Community CAMHS teams
- Primary care and partner agencies
- The Southern Counties Provider Collaborative
- Wider crisis and acute mental health pathways
You’ll join a skilled multidisciplinary team including:
- Nursing
- Psychology
- Occupational therapy
- Systemic therapy
- Social work
- Creative therapies
The team supports an active caseload of approximately 12–20 young people at any one time, with a strong focus on delivering timely care in the least restrictive setting.
What we’re looking for
We’re seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist who has:
- CCT in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or equivalent
- GMC Specialist Registration, or eligibility within six months
- MRCPsych or equivalent
- Approved Clinician status, or the ability to achieve this within three months
- Section 12 approval, or the ability to achieve this within three months
- Strong clinical leadership and multidisciplinary working skills
- The ability to manage complexity, risk and uncertainty
- A commitment to teaching, service improvement and collaborative care

Location
The role is based at Chalkhill, Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath, or another Sussex Partnership site by agreement with the service lead.
