Job Overview
Our service has an exciting opportunity for a CYP Psychological Trainings: Therapy Trainee Autism Spectrum Condition/Learning Disabilities (ASC/LD) to join our team as part of the NHS England (NHSE) funded Children and Young People (CYP) Psychological Training Programmes.
This government-funded initiative promotes the growth and skill of the child mental health workforce to meet much needed demand. NHSE covers salary and training costs for a one-year full-time position, allowing services to employ trainees to support specialist pathways to bridge the gaps in CYP mental health support.
This is a unique opportunity to apply your learning from weekly teaching into practical clinical interventions working with clients in the service making a direct impact in the lives of children, young people and their families.
Course start date: 18th January 2027
Training Information
This full-time training will begin in January 2027 with around 2-3 days a week for academic work (teaching and personal study), and 2.5 days based at the service seeing clients (children, young people, and carers) related to training assignments. Trainees will be both an employee of the service and an enrolled student with UCL/Anna Freud. Upon completion, qualified trainees will receive a UCL Postgraduate Diploma.
Main Duties of the Job
Main duties of this training role include:
- With the assistance of their clinical supervisor accept appropriate referrals;
- Assess clients for suitability for the treatment for which modality specific training is provided;
- Make decisions on suitability of new referrals, adhering to the department’s referral protocols, and refer unsuitable clients on to the relevant service or back to the referral agent as necessary;
- Formulate, implement and evaluate therapeutic intervention for clients in line with their training modality and experience;
- Involve the system around the child in treatment as appropriate, e.g. parent/carer, school, conveying therapy formulations with sensitivity in easily understood language;
- Attend multi-disciplinary meetings relating to referrals or clients in treatment, where appropriate;
- Complete all requirements relating to data collection within the service;
- Keep coherent records of all clinical activity in line with service protocols;
- Work closely with other members of the team ensuring appropriate step-up and step-down arrangements are in place to maintain a stepped care approach.

You will only be offered a UCL training place if you are successful in securing this post and you meet the university training requirements.

Please note: The position will be based with the CAMHS Early Intervention Service in Westminster but successful candidates will be expected to travel to Anna Freud in Central London (Rodney St, N1 9JH) for teaching during the training year.

Education And Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Minimum second-class Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent standard in a relevant subject (e.g. psychology, social work etc) or relevant equivalent professional experience
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge and understanding of the key features and symptoms associated with Autism and/or Learning Disabilities;
- Knowledge and understanding of the unique challenges for Autistic/LD children and young people and their families;
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of the MDT approach and collaborative working with other agencies to ensure the needs of Autistic/LD children and young people are understood and effectively met (i.e. education and social care agencies);
- Knowledge and understanding of issues relating to safeguarding children.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial experience working within a children and young people’s providing interventions in a mental health setting (e.g. mental health worker);
- Clinical competence and experience working with Autistic and/or LD individuals
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience of working with safeguarding issues;
- Experience of working as part of the multi-disciplinary team with children and young people with Autism and/or LD and their families
