About the Role

The Business Development team within Global Merchant Services (GMS) is responsible for driving the growth of American Express acceptance by acquiring new merchants, expanding existing business relationships, and developing strategic partnerships. The team combines relationship management, commercial strategy, analytics, and project management to identify growth opportunities, improve the customer experience, and support American Express's long-term business objectives.

This internship offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience within the Business Development team at American Express. The intern will support projects aligned with strategic, operational, and financial goals, while developing an understanding of merchant acquisition, partnership management, market strategy, and business analytics. The role provides exposure to cross-functional collaboration and the opportunity to work on meaningful initiatives that contribute to business growth and customer value.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop an understanding of the Business Development function and merchant ecosystem.
  • Conduct market research and analyse data to identify growth opportunities and business insights.
  • Support merchant acquisition and partner engagement activities.
  • Assist with tracking and reporting business performance using key performance indicators.
  • Build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support sales, marketing, and strategic growth initiatives.
  • Prepare presentations, reports, and recommendations for business partners and leadership.
  • Share insights and best practices to improve business performance and customer experience.
  • Contribute to project work aligned with team and company objectives

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Business, Economics, Finance, Marketing, Data Analytics, or a related discipline.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong customer focus and relationship-building abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently.
  • Project management and organisational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working with data and using insights to support decision-making.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated interest in payments, fintech, financial services, sales, marketing, or business development.
  • Experience using data analysis and visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or similar platforms.
  • Previous internship, placement year, student society leadership, or project experience.
  • Experience conducting market research, competitive analysis, or business strategy projects.
  • Strong presentation and storytelling skills, with the ability to communicate insights to different audiences.
  • Experience working with diverse stakeholders in a collaborative environment.
  • Demonstrated commercial awareness and an interest in helping businesses grow.
  • Ability to think creatively and identify innovative solutions to business challenges.
