Overview
International Card Services (ICS) unites American Express' international card issuing business, catering to Consumer, Small Business, and Corporate customers. With operations spanning 27 countries, ICS plays a crucial role in American Express' international business, serving a diverse range of customers.
About Governance & Control
Within ICS, Governance & Control assists businesses in identifying, understanding, and managing risk to ensure safe, responsible, and compliant operations. We collaborate with teams across various countries and business areas, offering guidance and expertise on risk management, controls, and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Our work encompasses a wide range of topics and business activities, such as:
- Assisting teams in assessing the risks associated with new products or processes.
- Supporting improvements in risk management practices.
- Analyzing emerging issues and trends.
- Helping the business comply with regulatory requirements.
About the Role
As a Summer Intern within ICS Governance & Control, you will:
- Gain practical experience in a global financial services organization.
- Contribute to meaningful work with real business impact.
- Join one of the teams within ICS Governance & Control and work on current business priorities and projects.
- Learn about Governance & Control while gaining broader exposure to American Express' risk management practices across its international businesses.
- Develop transferable skills, including problem-solving, analysis, communication, collaboration, and project management.
- Build your professional network.
Responsibilities
Depending on your placement and team priorities, you may:
- Support projects and initiatives that help ICS teams identify, understand, and manage business risks.
- Conduct research and gather information to support projects and decision-making.
- Review and analyze information to identify key themes, trends, and insights.
- Help prepare reports, presentations, and other materials for colleagues and senior leaders.
- Contribute to initiatives that improve processes, controls, and ways of working.
- Collaborate with colleagues across Governance & Control, other ICS teams, and international markets to achieve shared objectives.
- Participate in meetings and team discussions, contributing your ideas and perspectives.
- Take ownership of assigned tasks, manage your priorities, and provide updates on your progress.
- Develop an understanding of risk management, governance, and controls and how they support the successful operation of a global business.

Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a full-time undergraduate degree program in any discipline and in your penultimate year of study.
- An interest in business, financial services, risk management, governance, or understanding how large organizations operate.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to think logically, work with information, and identify key points.
- Interest in problem-solving, with the ability to approach challenges logically and consider different ways of improving processes.
- Good organization and time-management skills, with the ability to manage tasks and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work collaboratively and contribute effectively as part of a team.
- Curiosity and willingness to learn about new and unfamiliar topics.
- Proactive approach, including a willingness to ask questions, seek feedback, and take ownership of your work.
- Comfortable using common Microsoft Office tools, such as PowerPoint, Word, and Excel, or willing to develop these skills during the internship.
