Head of Advanced Defence Capabilities
Location – Bristol, hybrid.
Salary – Up to £72,000 plus a 30% bonus, car allowance, and package.
Please note: Due to the nature of the programme, this role requires eligibility for UK Security Clearance.
We’re looking for an experienced engineering or scientific leader with strong knowledge of Laser Directed Energy Weapon systems, alongside proven people management and programme delivery experience. The role will lead a specialist team working across the development, delivery, and future capability of advanced laser systems.

What you’ll be doing:
- Leading and developing a team of specialist scientists and engineers
- Overseeing multiple complex, multi-disciplinary projects and work packages
- Providing strategic and technical direction across Laser DEW technologies
- Driving research, development, and innovation programmes
- Building relationships with academic, industry, and government partners
- Supporting international collaboration and representing the organisation at relevant industry and defence forums
- Managing technical challenges and driving projects from concept through to implementation

What we’re looking for:
- Engineering or physics background, ideally with weapons systems experience
- Strong knowledge and experience of Laser DEW technologies and systems
- Proven people management and technical leadership experience
- Experience delivering small programmes or complex technical work packages
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, and influencing skills
- Understanding of programme lifecycles and R&D funding processes
