£50,269 – £53,460 | Permanent | Predominantly Remote | South Coast

We are currently recruiting for an exciting Capital Principal Accountant opportunity with a local authority on the South Coast.

This is a senior finance position with a strong capital focus, offering an excellent opportunity for an experienced accountant to take ownership of capital accounting, capital programme monitoring and financial strategy, while also providing high-level financial advice across the organisation.

The Role

As Capital Principal Accountant, you will play a key role in supporting the Council’s financial strategy and ensuring effective management of its capital resources.

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading on capital accounting and capital programme monitoring
  • Reviewing and maintaining the capital strategy and programme
  • Providing detailed resources analysis and financial modelling
  • Leading option appraisal and business analysis for proposed new initiatives
  • Advising senior managers, Directors and elected Members on complex financial matters
  • Supporting financial planning, budget monitoring and reporting
  • Providing expert advice on accounting, financial controls and regulatory requirements
  • Driving improvements across financial systems, processes and procedures
  • Supporting the delivery of effective financial governance and audit compliance
  • Managing, mentoring and developing finance staff

About You

We’re looking for an experienced finance professional with a strong background in accountancy and, ideally, local government finance.

You will have strong experience across areas such as:

  • Capital accounting and capital programmes
  • Financial modelling and financial analysis
  • Budget monitoring and financial planning
  • Reconciliations and year-end reporting
  • Financial systems and controls
  • Providing financial advice to senior stakeholders
  • Managing or developing finance staff.

Knowledge of local authority accounting, including the relevant accounting framework and CIPFA guidance, would be highly advantageous. AAT or equivalent experience is essential, with a CCAB qualification desirable.
