GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES
The Cardiac Sonographer will be responsible for the independent operation of the sonographic equipment and for performing and communicating the results of diagnostic exams. The DMS is responsible for daily operations of the sonographic laboratory, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, and quality assessment (QA). The DMS will also assist in the administrative and clinical functions of Mid-State Health Clinic to deliver the highest quality of patient care.

RADIOLOGY DUTIES
- Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations.
- Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information, and images.
- Uses independent judgement during the sonographic and x-ray exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
- Adjusts equipment controls; B-mode, M Mode, Doppler, and Color Imaging as needed.
- Analyzes sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate provider.
- Coordinates work schedule with Radiology Director and/or scheduling desk to assume workload coverage.
- Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental, and physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer’s care.
- Responsible for the daily operations of the sonographic laboratory.
- Maintains accurate patient records.
- Ensures operation of sonography equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
- Explains treatment procedures and prepares the patient and exam room for examination.
- Completes medical chart to include medical services rendered, test results, and supplies used.
- Generates initial reports comparing current and prior studies for physician review.
- Performs patient callbacks, arranges referrals and testing, and schedules follow-up appointments.
- Works with fellow staff in cross-training.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES
- Answer the telephone – Take accurate messages (name, phone #, time, purpose of call, and when the best time to return the call) with appropriate problem-solving.
- Patient scheduling – Answer phones and make patient appointments via the scheduling functions.
- Confirm that all pertinent patient information has been entered into the computer system and that signatures have been obtained on all necessary consent forms.
- Understand and be able to access computerized information about patients, insurance, injuries, and companies.
- When the chart is complete, fax or mail appropriate material so it will be sent out according to specifications.
- Continuously communicate with clinical staff.
EDUCATION
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in diagnostic medical sonography, cardiovascular technology, or related field.
- Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program or Cardiovascular Technology Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
- Current certification with ARRT, ARDMS, or CCI.
- Current New Hampshire License.
- BLS certification.
SKILLS AND APTITUDES
- Knowledge of specific and OSHA requirements regarding sonography procedures and exams.
- Ability to effectively operate sonographic equipment.
- Ability to evaluate sonograms in order to acquire appropriate diagnostic information.
- Ability to use independent judgement to acquire the optimum diagnostic sonographic information in each examination performed.
- Ability to evaluate and communicate diagnostic information to the radiologist or cardiologist.
- Ability to escort or transport the patient by wheelchair when appropriate.
- Basic computer skills including familiarity with electronic medical records.
- Detail-oriented with excellent interpersonal communication skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.
- Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling equipment (such as imaging machines, stretchers, or wheelchairs).
- Ability to assist, position, and transfer patients of varying sizes and physical abilities, often requiring lifting or supporting up to 50 lbs. with or without assistance.
- Manual dexterity to operate imaging equipment, computer systems, and accessories.
- Visual acuity to read images, screens, and documentation with accuracy.
- Hearing ability to respond to patient needs and alarms in a clinical setting.
MENTAL DEMANDS
- Ability to concentrate and maintain attention to detail while operating complex imaging equipment.
- High degree of accuracy and critical thinking in producing and reviewing diagnostic images.
- Capacity to follow strict protocols, safety guidelines, and physician instructions.
- Effective problem-solving and troubleshooting when equipment or patient issues arise.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills to interact with patients who may be anxious, in pain, or uncooperative.
- Emotional resilience to handle exposure to trauma, illness, and potentially distressing medical situations.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work is performed in a healthcare setting with exposure to infectious diseases, body fluids, and hazardous materials.
- Potential exposure to radiation; adherence to strict safety and shielding protocols required.
- Frequent interaction with patients, families, physicians, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
- Need to adapt to urgent and emergency situations, including rapid response to critical patients.
- Work environment includes bright lighting, imaging machine sounds, and occasional confined spaces.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lead aprons, gloves, and masks as required.
