City of Wolverhampton Council

Location: Various sites across the City of Wolverhampton

Pay Rate: £13.69 per hour Weekly Pay

Hours: Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend work may be required

Shift Pattern: Rota-based shifts between 6:00am and 10:00pm

Contract Type: Temporary

DBS Check: Standard DBS required

Driving Requirement: Full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle essential

Join City of Wolverhampton Council as a Caretaker

Are you a practical, reliable, and proactive individual with experience in site maintenance, security, and facilities management? We are recruiting Caretakers to support a range of Council-managed buildings across Wolverhampton.

This is a varied and hands-on role where you will be responsible for maintaining safe, clean, secure, and welcoming environments for staff, visitors, and service users. No two days are the same, and you'll play a vital role in ensuring Council buildings and grounds are well maintained and operational.

Key Responsibilities

Security & Key Holding

  • Act as a key holder for Council premises.
  • Open and secure buildings, gates, and site access points.
  • Set and deactivate alarm systems.
  • Conduct routine security checks and report any incidents or breaches.
  • Liaise with emergency services when required.

Fire Safety & Compliance

  • Carry out regular fire alarm and emergency lighting checks.
  • Ensure fire exits and escape routes remain clear and compliant.
  • Maintain accurate records within fire safety logbooks.
  • Report defects and arrange corrective action when necessary.

Building Maintenance & Repairs

  • Undertake minor repairs and maintenance tasks including:
    • Basic plumbing repairs
    • Minor carpentry work
    • Painting and decorating
    • General building repairs
  • Replace accessible light bulbs, tubes, and fittings.
  • Carry out regular inspections of buildings and grounds.
  • Report and monitor maintenance issues.

Cleaning & Site Presentation

  • Ensure buildings, facilities, and surrounding areas remain clean and hygienic.
  • Replenish consumables such as soap, paper towels, and toilet rolls.
  • Manage waste disposal and maintain external areas.
  • Respond to emergency cleaning situations when required.

Grounds Maintenance

  • Litter picking, weeding, pruning, and general upkeep of external areas.
  • Clear snow and ice from entrances and walkways during adverse weather.
  • Remove graffiti and maintain site appearance.
  • Clean drains, gullies, and gutters where required.

Operational Support

  • Move furniture, equipment, and deliveries around sites.
  • Assist with room setups for meetings, events, and lettings.
  • Record utility meter readings when required.
  • Support contractors on site and ensure compliance with site procedures.

What We're Looking For

  • Previous experience in a caretaking, facilities, maintenance, or site support role.
  • Ability to undertake minor repairs and maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of health and safety procedures.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative.
  • Flexible approach to working hours.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle.
  • Willingness to travel between sites across Wolverhampton.
  • Ability to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced DBS check.
