Hull Training and Adult Education is seeking a reliable, proactive, and practical Caretaker to help maintain a safe, clean, secure, and welcoming environment across our training centres.

This is a varied and hands-on role that supports staff, learners, visitors, and contractors by ensuring our buildings, grounds, equipment, and facilities are maintained to a high standard. No two days are the same, and the successful candidate will take pride in keeping our sites operational, compliant, and presentable.

About the Role

As Caretaker, you will undertake a wide range of building, maintenance, security, cleaning, and site support duties, including:

  • Opening and securing buildings.
  • Setting up training rooms, workshops, and examination spaces.
  • Carrying out basic repairs, maintenance, and DIY tasks.
  • Maintaining safe, clean, and hygienic communal, office, and learning environments.
  • Undertaking grounds maintenance, including gardening, gritting, leaf clearance, and external cleaning.
  • Monitoring heating systems and carrying out routine building checks.
  • Completing health and safety inspections, fire safety checks, water hygiene monitoring, and maintaining associated records.
  • Supervising contractors on site and reporting maintenance issues.
  • Assisting with furniture moves, deliveries, stock management, and transportation of equipment between sites.
  • Supporting the service's commitment to safeguarding children, young people, and vulnerable adults.

Working Pattern

This role requires flexibility to meet the operational needs of the service. While the majority of hours will be worked during standard operating times, the successful candidate will also be required to:

  • Work occasional early mornings to open buildings and prepare facilities for training and examinations.
  • Work occasional late evenings to support classes, events, examinations, and secure premises at the end of the day.
  • Work some weekends to support service delivery, examinations, events, maintenance activities, and building security requirements.

Appropriate notice will be provided wherever possible, and working arrangements will be managed in line with service requirements.

What We're Looking For

Essential

  • Previous experience in a caretaking, facilities, maintenance, or DIY-related role.
  • Good practical maintenance and problem-solving skills.
  • A full driving licence.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
  • An understanding of health and safety responsibilities within the workplace.
  • A commitment to safeguarding children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
  • The ability to work independently and prioritise tasks effectively.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of building maintenance and site security procedures.
  • Experience within an education, training, or public sector environment.
  • Awareness of fire safety, water hygiene, and facilities management requirements.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
