Caretaker – Sunderland
Rate of Pay: From £12.71 per hour
We are seeking a reliable and hardworking Caretaker to join a welcoming secondary school in Sunderland. This is a fantastic opportunity for a practical individual with facilities or premises experience to help maintain a safe, secure, and well-presented environment for students and staff.
Working as part of the school's facilities team, you will support the effective day-to-day operation of the premises. The position combines practical maintenance with site security, health and safety, housekeeping, porterage, and general facilities support.
As a Caretaker, you will help ensure the school premises are well maintained and its facilities continue to function correctly.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out routine maintenance and first-line repairs across the school premises.
- Support planned and reactive maintenance activities.
- Undertake routine health and safety, premises, and fire safety checks.
- Support opening, locking, and general security of the school site.
- Monitor security systems, alarms, locks, and CCTV and report faults where required.
- Support contractors working on site.
- Carry out porterage of furniture, equipment, goods, and deliveries.
- Support housekeeping, waste management, cleaning, and grounds maintenance requirements.
- Monitor plant and equipment and report faults or hazards promptly.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies and adverse weather conditions.
- Ensure safeguarding procedures and school policies are followed at all times.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have
- Previous practical experience maintaining facilities or premises.
- A working knowledge of buildings and carrying out first-line repairs.
- Good knowledge of health and safety procedures.
- The ability to organise and prioritise workloads effectively.
- Confidence using small tools and undertaking practical tasks.
- A reliable, flexible, and solution-focused approach.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a facilities team.
- Relevant Caretaking, Trade, Facilities, Or First Aid Qualifications – Desirable.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.
This Caretaker role would suit a practical and dependable individual who takes pride in maintaining high standards. A successful Caretaker will play an important role in ensuring the school remains safe, secure, clean, and welcoming throughout the year.
