JOB DESCRIPTION
Employment status and working hours
Fixed term for 12 months, part time for 22 hours per week. In this role your weekly working pattern will be Monday to Thursday inclusive from 17:30 to 21:30 and Saturday 10:00 to 17:00 (Saturday includes a one hour unpaid lunch break). Days and times may be subject to variation dependent on need and academic calendar.
Organisation structure
Chief Operating Officer, The London School of Architecture. Your line manager will be Eimear Marley, Operations Lead and you will have direct interaction with Lee Ivett, Head of School.
Place of work
Your full working week will be spent at The London School of Architecture (The LSA) office at 4 Beechwood Road, London, E8 3DY.
High level summary of job role
You will provide essential out-of-hours operational and facilities support, to ensure The LSA studio remains a safe, secure and effective learning environment for our students. Working during evenings and weekends, you will support student access, maintain building security, undertake minor maintenance and repairs, and act as a key point of contact within the studio. You will work closely with students, the Head of School, operations team and external contractors to support the day-to-day operation, upkeep and health and safety compliance of the studio environment.
Specific job role accountabilities and responsibilities
Premises, maintenance and facilities support
- Undertake minor maintenance, repair and redecoration works throughout the studio building, including painting, fixing shelving, noticeboards and signage, and carrying out basic repairs to fixtures and fittings.
- Identify, report and monitor building maintenance issues, escalating larger works to the Operations Lead.
- Ensure maintenance records are maintained accurately and updated regularly.
- Support and maintain records of statutory compliance checks where required.
- Assist with routine inspections of the building and report any health and safety concerns promptly.
- Oversee contractors working on site when requested, ensuring works are completed safely and with minimal disruption to students and staff.
- Regularly inspect and maintain external areas, including entrances, bin storage areas, outdoor spaces and reporting any issues for action.
Studio operations and facilities coordination
- Support the effective operation of studio facilities during evenings and weekends, ensuring teaching and study spaces remain safe, clean and fit for purpose.
- Assist with room layouts, furniture movements and the preparation of spaces for teaching sessions, reviews, events and exhibitions.
- Support office or studio moves, including the relocation and disposal of furniture and equipment as required.
- Carry out practical tasks that improve the functionality and appearance of studio spaces.
- Monitor studio facilities and proactively address minor issues before they escalate into larger maintenance concerns.
Studio supervision and student support
- Provide a consistent staff presence during evening and weekend opening hours, ensuring students have safe and secure access to the studio environment.
- Monitor studio use and promote compliance with health and safety requirements, reporting concerns or incidents to the appropriate staff member.
- Supervise the building and studio during out-of-hours access, providing practical support, first aid if required and escalating issues where required.
- Support a positive studio culture through maintaining visibility, encouraging respectful use of shared facilities, and responding appropriately to student enquiries.
- Secure the building at the end of each shift, ensuring all areas are checked, alarms activated and access procedures followed.

Health, safety and compliance
- Undertake training and act as a designated Fire Warden and First Aider, responding appropriately to incidents and emergencies.
- Support the maintenance of a safe working and learning environment through compliance with health and safety procedures and reporting requirements.
- Assist with emergency evacuations and building security procedures as required including (where required) being on call.
- Maintain awareness of safeguarding, health and safety, and operational procedures relevant to the role.
Other important features of the job role
Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) criminal record check: Due to the nature of the working environment and to safeguard any children or young people on premises, you will need to undergo an Enhanced DBS check with the Children's Barred List. As a result and as part of the application process, you must disclose all and any past or pending cautions or convictions, whether spent or otherwise, unless it is either a protected caution or a protected conviction under the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (2013 and 2020). PERSON SPECIFICATION
Qualifications and training
- GCSE Maths and English language Grade C or 4 or above (D, A).
- Manual handling training (D, A).
- First Aid or Fire Warden training (D, A).
Previous experience
- Working in higher education (D, A, I).
- Experience in a maintenance role (E, A, I).
- Lone working (E, A, I).

PAY AND BENEFITS
Salary
Actual salary £16,931 per annum (£26,936 Full Time Equivalent).
Holiday
26 days paid holiday (rising to 28 with service) plus paid bank/public holidays plus up to five paid closure days (typically between Christmas and New Year); all per holiday year Full Time Equivalent. Our holiday year runs from 1 August to 31 July. We also have a holiday buy and sell scheme in place. Sometimes the University does not need to close for five days per year and any balance (for example one day), can be used as a paid Wellbeing Day to take time out for your own physical or mental health.

Pensions auto-enrolment to the People’s Pension which is a default salary sacrifice scheme. You may opt out of salary sacrifice but remain in the scheme, or you may choose to opt out altogether. We provide life assurance (death in service) cover as standard to all employees.
