About the Role

South Hampstead High School is looking for a practical, reliable, and proactive Caretaker to join our experienced Site Team. This is a varied, hands-on role where you will make a visible difference every day, helping to ensure that our Senior School remains a safe, welcoming, and well-maintained environment for pupils, staff, and visitors.

Working closely with the Senior School Premises Manager, you will help keep the site running smoothly, responding to maintenance requests, carrying out minor repairs, undertaking security and compliance checks, supporting contractors, and helping with the set-up of school events and activities. You will also assist with porterage, grounds duties, and the general upkeep of communal areas.

You will join a well-organized premises team covering the school day from opening at 6.30 am through to 6 pm on a shift basis. Some flexibility for occasional evening and weekend work will be required.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Senior School Premises Manager
  • Respond to maintenance requests
  • Carry out minor repairs
  • Undertake security and compliance checks
  • Support contractors
  • Assist with the set-up of school events and activities
  • Assist with porterage
  • Perform grounds duties
  • Maintain communal areas

About You

We are looking for someone with good general maintenance and practical skills who takes pride in their work. You will be organized, self-motivated, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team, with the ability to prioritize tasks and respond positively when unexpected issues arise. Strong interpersonal skills are important, as you will work with pupils, colleagues, parents, contractors, and visitors across the school.

You will also need to be computer literate and able to drive. Previous premises management or contractor supervision experience would be advantageous but is not essential.
