Carpentry Apprentice
Phil Deare Carpentry Ltd are looking for a hardworking, reliable and passionate Carpentry apprentice to join their experienced team in and around Exeter. Phil Deare is a very experienced company that has taken on many apprentices throughout the years working to teach them new skills and develop the ones they already have.
What you'll do at work
The Apprenticeship in Carpentry consists of:
- Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery Standard (Site)
- Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test - CSCS Test
As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre for one day per week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated Skills Group assessor, who will monitor your progress during your apprenticeship training.
Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical.

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Comply with health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance.
- Identify and use safety control equipment, for example, RPE, dust suppression, PPE and LEV.
- Comply with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
- Comply with industry regulations, standards, and guidance.
- Prepare and maintain a safe working area.
- Interpret and use information from drawings and specifications.
- Estimate required materials and produce a cutting list.
- Verbally communicate with others, applying construction terminology.
- Select, use and store hand tools.
- Select, use and store power tools.
- Maintain and sharpen hand tools.
- Produce jigs.
- Identifies well-being support available to self and others.
Site carpenter
- Apply first fix techniques and practices for:

- structural carcassing (load bearing studwork),
-
- straight timber or metal partition walls,
-
- floor joists
-
- floor joist coverings and
-
- straight flights of stairs.

- Install structural fixings.
- Size timber from sizing tables.
- Apply site second fix techniques and practices for:
-
- service encasement,
-
- cladding
-
- wall and floor units and fitments,
-
- handrails and spindles to straight flights of stairs,
-
- internal and external doors,
-
- skirting boards and architrave,
-
- window boards.

- Apply site carpenter techniques and practices to construction of rafter roofs, including trussed (prefabricated) and traditional (built on site) including the construction of verge, eaves and fitting loft access.
- Use and store laser levels for example cross line laser.
- Form connections, for example, using joints, nails, screws, bolts and adhesive.
- Apply measuring, marking out, cutting (square and angled), mitring, hinging and recessing techniques.
- Carrying out splicing and scribing techniques.

Architectural joiner
- Produce setting out details, including setting rods, and mark out for timber products.
- Produce basic woodworking joints including dovetail, bridal, mortise and tenon and halving.
- Form connections using dowels, biscuit, staples and adhesives.
- Apply techniques and practices to the manufacture and assembly of a timber window with casement including glazing rebates and associated ironmongery.
- Apply manufacture and assembly techniques for first fix products:
-
- straight staircases,
-
- door frames and linings.

- Apply manufacture and assembly techniques for second fix products:
-
- timber doors,
-
- wall and floor units,
-
- timber mouldings,
-
- staircase spindles and balustrades.

- Fit ironmongery including door locks, door handles, door hinges, latches and draw runners.
- Inspect, prepare and operate fixed machinery.
Training schedule
Carpentry and Joinery Level 2 apprenticeship standard.
Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical.
As an additional qualification you will also achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.

As part of your apprenticeship Skills Group will also support you to complete your online CSCS test, which will enable you to apply for your CSCS Card. This shows that you are at the required competent level to carry out site work with the employer.
Essential qualifications
- GCSE in:

You must be a good team player with the motivation to succeed within a busy construction industry. The successful applicant will need to be reliable, hardworking and enthusiastic with a genuine interest in the carpentry sector.
About this employer
Phil Deare is the owner and runs a highly experienced Company with all aspects of the construction industry. Phil Deare is based in Exeter but has apprentices in Plymouth and surrounding areas. At present 95% of Phil Deare workload is based on renovating and maintaining social housing throughout Plymouth, Exeter, Paignton, and Newton Abbot. They have undertaken and completed many projects in the past both large and small, completing all projects on time to a very high level of workmanship, which you would expect from a team with many years of experience and knowledge. Phil Deare Ltd have previously been very involved with supporting learners through work experience and/or their apprenticeships and are passionate about providing opportunities to those who want to start a career in Carpentry. They have had apprentices in the past and currently.
