Job Summary

The Casework Officer supports the delivery of disclosure and casework activity across the J9 Disclosures function, contributing to the preparation, management and integrity of material relating to litigation, inquiries, Subject Access Requests (SARs) and civil claims involving Specialist Military Units (SMU). The role ensures that casework outputs are underpinned by accurate, complete and auditable records, enabling Defence to meet its statutory, legal and information governance requirements.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job Description

Working as part of the casework team, the post holder supports the collection, organisation and preparation of material for disclosure and external release. This includes maintaining structured case files, ensuring documentation is correctly indexed, labelled and recorded, and enabling the timely retrieval of information in response to legal, Parliamentary and inquiry-driven tasking. The role contributes directly to the production of disclosure bundles and evidential material under the direction of Casework Officers and LEGADs.

The role maintains robust document control and information management processes across J9 casework, ensuring that records are held within secure, structured and auditable systems. This includes the governance of SharePoint libraries, application of metadata and naming conventions, management of permissions and version control, and oversight of document storage and retrieval. Through this, the role supports the traceability, defensibility and integrity of SMU case handling.

In addition, the Casework Officer 2 provides casework coordination and secretariat support, including managing correspondence, maintaining case trackers and ensuring that information flows are controlled and up to date across multiple workstreams. The post holder supports knowledge continuity by maintaining authoritative templates, records and document sets, ensuring consistency and reducing duplication or loss of information within high-volume casework.

Under direction, the post holder supports the preparation of material for disclosure, including document collation, formatting, indexing and basic redactions, ensuring outputs meet required standards and are handled in accordance with security classifications and legal guidance.

Operating within a high-tempo, scrutiny-driven environment, the role requires strong attention to detail, organisational discipline and the ability to manage competing priorities. The Casework Officer contributes directly to the efficient delivery of casework, the production of defensible disclosure outputs, and the maintenance of a secure and compliant information environment, supporting Defence’s ability to meet its legal and statutory obligations.

  • Maintain accurate, secure and auditable case files, retrieving and organising material for litigation, inquiries, SARs and routine civil claims, and providing timely evidential support to legal teams.
  • Prepare, structure and quality-assure evidential bundles, ensuring completeness, accuracy and alignment with case strategy.
  • Undertake redaction, reclassification and controlled release of sensitive material, ensuring all disclosures are lawful, proportionate and compliant with MOD/SMU policy.
  • Maintain SharePoint governance across casework and evidential areas, ensuring authoritative document sets, correct naming conventions, version control and knowledge retention
  • Deliver core records-management functions, including recording protectively marked material, digitising hard-copy records and maintaining secure long-term stewardship.
  • Manage archive workflows, including preparing files for archive, recalling archived material for sensitive SMU cases, and maintaining the SMU Contract Database.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Strong analytical skills are essential for reviewing material, identifying relevant information and supporting litigation, inquiries, SARs and routine civil claims.

You will work collaboratively with colleagues across the J9 team, including policy advisers, lawyers, and the redactions function, contributing to a high-integrity, audit-ready evidence base for SMU. You will be comfortable operating at pace, managing multiple tasks with competing deadlines, and maintaining accuracy, discretion and professional standards throughout.
