About the role:

The role is accountable for defining, governing, and continuously evolving the SAP technical platform, establishing enterprise standards, architecture principles, engineering practices, and operational excellence frameworks that deliver a secure, scalable, resilient, and high-performing SAP landscape. As part of Castrol’s’ separation from BP. The Staff Enterprise Technology Engineer will play a key role in the successful execution of Technology Services Agreement (TSA) exit activities relating to SAP technical platforms. The role provides technical leadership across SAP and integrated ERP ecosystems, driving modern engineering practices including Agile, DevOps, SRE, and automation to improve platform reliability, accelerate delivery, and maximise business value. The role is also accountable for SAP technical readiness and successful TSA exit, ensuring the transition of knowledge, services, operational ownership, and support capabilities to establish a sustainable, independent technology operating model.

Key Accountabilities:

SAP Platform Strategy and Standards

  • Define, maintain, and continuously improve SAP technical standards across cloud, infrastructure, operating systems, databases, SAP Basis, monitoring, and automation domains.
  • Research emerging technologies and assess their applicability across bp's SAP estate.
  • Establish future-state platform roadmaps and technical patterns.
  • Supply to SAP Platform Design Authorities and governance forums.

Platform Engineering and Modernization

  • Design and implement innovative solutions that enhance the SAP technical platform.
  • Lead technical platform modernization initiatives.
  • Drive improvements in platform reliability, scalability, resilience, security, performance, and cost optimization.
  • Develop reference architectures and standard operating environments (SOE).

Cloud, Infrastructure and Automation

  • Design cloud-native and hybrid infrastructure platforms supporting SAP workloads.
  • Develop and productionizing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation capabilities.
  • Find opportunities to eliminate manual operational activities through automation and orchestration.
  • Support strategic migration programmes, including cloud transformations and SAP modernisation initiatives.

SAP Technical Leadership:

  • Provide deep technical expertise across SAP Basis and supporting technology layers.
  • Lead technical investigations and resolution activities for complex platform issues.
  • Provide third-line support during major incidents and critical service disruptions.
  • Act as a technical authority for SAP platform change and lifecycle management.

Monitoring, Observability and Operational Excellence

  • Advance monitoring, observability, and operational intelligence capabilities across the SAP estate.
  • Define operational indicators, platform health standards, and service management practices.
  • Drive continual service improvement initiatives.
  • Support operational readiness for new platform capabilities.

Partner Management

  • Collaborate with infrastructure, cloud, security, application, architecture, and service management teams.
  • Build strong relationships with delivery partners and third-party vendors.
  • Communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical partners.
  • Influence platform decisions through experienced technical recommendations.

TSA Exit Planning

  • Support development of TSA exit strategies, plans, and technical workstreams.
  • Assess technical dependencies between retained and transitioning SAP environments.
  • Identify risks, constraints, and mitigation plans associated with service separation activities.
  • Supply to TSA exit governance and readiness reviews.
  • Design and complete SAP platform separation activities across cloud, infrastructure, OS, database, and Basis layers.
  • Support SAP landscape carve-outs, tenant separations, and environment migrations.
  • Ensure technical integrity and compliance throughout separation activities.
  • Lead technical cutover planning and execution.
  • Validate operational readiness of target environments before TSA exit.
  • Ensure monitoring, automation, backup, security, disaster recovery, and support processes are established and tested.
  • Conduct technical readiness assessments and exit criteria reviews.
  • Support knowledge transfer to receiving operational teams.
  • Identify and resolve technical dependencies impacting TSA exit achievements.
  • Handle platform-level risks associated with migration and separation activities.
  • Support business continuity and service resilience during transition periods.
  • Develop contingency and rollback plans where required.

Data Centre, Cloud & Infrastructure Transition

Job requirements:

  • Acts as the SAP Basis and Platform Engineering Lead for the design, implementation, operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of SAP landscapes, ensuring platform stability, performance, security, resilience, and alignment with business requirements.
  • Leads SAP technical architecture, system administration, upgrades, patching, migrations, refreshes, high availability, disaster recovery, and cloud transformation activities across SAP environments, including S/4HANA, ECC, BW, PI/PO, Solution Manager, Business Technology Platform (BTP), and associated integrations.
  • Experienced in operating SAP systems on Hyperscale including provisioning
  • Drives consistency to SAP technical standards, governance, security, compliance, operational processes, and standard methodologies, ensuring solutions are designed for operational excellence, scalability, supportability, and long-term sustainability.
  • Provides technical leadership for SAP infrastructure, database, operating system, middleware, transport management, monitoring, automation, performance optimisation, and cybersecurity activities, including vulnerability remediation and audit compliance.
  • Works closely with Enterprise Architecture, Security, Infrastructure, Application Development, Managed Service Providers, and business partners to define SAP platform strategy, roadmaps, standards, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Finds opportunities to modernise and optimise SAP platforms through automation, cloud technologies, and emerging SAP technologies.
  • Develops strong working relationships across Digital and IT teams, providing technical thought leadership, mentoring SAP Basis engineers and platform specialists, and supporting capability development across the organisation.
  • Ensures SAP platform services meet agreed availability, performance, recoverability, and service level objectives, leading incident resolution, problem management, capacity planning, and operational readiness activities.
