I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
This role is open to Durham University students only. Please note, the post holder must be enrolled on a degree course for the 2026/27 year. The application window may close earlier if a large number of applications are received.
The role will involve working within the Department of English Studies to promote its events and other research-related activities to public and academic audiences, through the use of practical marketing and evaluation tools, including social media.
The role is for 5 hours per week. Respecting the varying demands of your studies and the social media calendar, this can be averaged out in discussion with the Department's Digital Coordinator (i.e. you may work a little more in one week to work less a subsequent week, or vice versa). You will need to be available to work during vacation periods outside of term time. The job can be done remotely so there is no requirement to be on campus during this period.
The job is subject to a probation period of one month initially.
