About The Role
As a Category Buyer at AO, you'll be right at the heart of keeping our product ranges competitive, exciting and packed with value for our customers. You'll own your category from end to end, working with some of the biggest brands in the industry to make sure we've got the right products, at the right price, exactly when our customers need them.
This isn't just about buying products. It's about spotting opportunities before anyone else, building strong supplier partnerships, negotiating brilliant deals and using data to make smart commercial decisions that drive sales and profit.
If you love turning insights into action, thrive on building relationships, and get a buzz from seeing your decisions make a real impact, you'll fit right in. No two days are the same, and that's exactly how we like it. One day you could be negotiating a new supplier agreement, the next launching an exciting new range or reacting to the latest market trends to keep us one step ahead of the competition.
Our people are our superpower, and we’re unstoppable when we’re together! We want your ideas to flow, and what better way to make that happen than being based onsite in our Bolton office 5 days a week, where our culture fuels creativity, collaboration and growth. If a £1 bet in the pub between two friends can become the UKs most trusted electrical retailer, imagine what else can be achieved when we’re together.
Here's What You Can Expect To Be Doing
- Owning and developing a defined product category to maximise sales, margin and customer appeal.
- Building strong relationships with manufacturers and suppliers, becoming their go-to contact at AO.
- Negotiating trading agreements, product ranges, promotional activity and commercial terms.
- Securing additional marketing and promotional funding to drive category growth.
- Analysing sales performance, market trends and competitor activity to identify opportunities and make informed decisions.
- Managing stock levels to ensure availability while controlling aged stock and maintaining agreed KPIs.
- Working closely with teams across Marketing, Supply Chain, Finance and Commercial to deliver the best possible customer proposition.
- Launching new products and ranges from key branded suppliers.
- Responding quickly to changes in the market and adapting strategies to stay ahead of competitors.
- Delivering exciting promotional plans that support business objectives and drive customer demand.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
