Job Role: Category Specialist - Environment

Contract Type: Permanent

Salary: £43545 - £51228 (dependent on skills, knowledge, and experience)

Location: London (Hybrid)

Sector: Local Authority

We're supporting a forward-thinking public sector organisation in the search for a Procurement Category Specialist to help deliver strategic procurement activity across construction, facilities management, refurbishment, repairs, and maintenance.

Working closely with stakeholders across the organisation, you'll provide procurement expertise throughout the procurement lifecycle, support the development of category strategies and forward plans, and help deliver compliant, value-for-money procurement solutions.

Your New Role

  • Support the delivery of procurement projects across a broad range of goods, works, and services categories.
  • Work with internal stakeholders to develop procurement strategies, category plans, and tender documentation.
  • Provide expert guidance to ensure procurement activities remain compliant with public sector procurement legislation and internal governance requirements.
  • Develop evaluation methodologies and support the assessment of supplier submissions.
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders and suppliers to identify opportunities for collaboration, efficiencies, and value for money.
  • Support and lead supplier negotiations to secure the best commercial outcomes.
  • Manage procurement activity throughout the tendering and contract award process, ensuring accurate record keeping and regulatory compliance.
  • For more experienced candidates, lead complex procurement projects, develop category strategies, and drive continuous improvement and innovation within assigned spend areas.

What You'll Need to Succeed

  • Strong knowledge and practical experience of UK Procurement Law and public sector procurement best practice.
  • Proven procurement experience within a complex organisation, delivering procurement projects across goods, works, and services categories.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced environment with changing deadlines.
  • Strong analytical skills, with experience interpreting financial and commercial data to support decision-making.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and relationship-building skills, both internally and externally.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear reports, presentations, and procurement documentation.
  • Advanced IT skills, including experience using procurement systems, e-procurement platforms, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience within construction, facilities management, housing, highways, repairs, and maintenance categories would be advantageous.
  • CIPS qualification, working towards CIPS, or equivalent procurement experience preferred.
