Job Description

The post holder will be responsible for delivering high-quality time-limited therapy to UHMBT employees referred to the Counselling Service following a bereavement, or living with anxiety, depression, work-related stress, or other losses and their effects on mental health. This will involve:

  • Providing comprehensive specialist psychological therapy.
  • Liaising with multidisciplinary teams where needed.
  • Working autonomously within professional guidelines, exercising personal responsibility for the systematic governance of professional practice.

Clinical casework primarily involves providing specialist therapy for individuals living with a range of issues. The post holder is expected to:

  • Work only within their range of competency.
  • Seek regular supervision as deemed necessary.
  • Escalate any concerns to the Nurse Manager or Wellbeing Lead.

Responsibilities

  • To work with UHMBT staff who are referred by management, Occupational Health Nurses, or self-referred.
  • To offer both short-term work with clients and refer on where clinically indicated.
  • To provide a brief psychological assessment of the need for counselling or psychotherapy, drawing on theoretical knowledge, whilst utilizing current research to formulate and implement treatment plans dependent on the client’s needs.
  • To undertake risk assessment and risk management, taking into account the level of trauma experienced by the client. Work within the scope of personal competence, seeking regular supervision where required and escalating any concerns to the Nurse Manager or Wellbeing Lead.
  • To refer clients to local services where appropriate.
  • To be mindful of concerns such as Safeguarding and child protection issues.
  • To hold an appropriate level of confidentiality which both respects the client’s rights and aids the work of the MDT.
  • Ensure services are sensitive to the needs of clients from different social, racial, and cultural backgrounds and communicate across language and cultural barriers respecting the cultural context of service users.

Locations

We operate from three main hospitals:

  • Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow.
  • The Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI).
  • Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal.

As well as a number of community healthcare premises including:

  • Millom Hospital and GP Practice.
  • Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe.
  • Ulverston Community Health Centre.

Services Provided

  • FGH and RLI: A range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units, and various Consultant-led services.
  • WGH: A range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life-threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
  • All three main hospitals: A range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case, and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
  • Community Service for adults: Provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health, and manage their conditions through high-quality care, advice, and support.
