Certification Engineer – Battery Electric Heavy Commercial Vehicles
Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated Certification Engineer to lead and support global vehicle homologation and regulatory compliance activities for battery electric heavy commercial vehicles (HCVs). The role is responsible for ensuring vehicles, systems, and components comply with applicable safety, environmental, EMC, electrical, and vehicle type approval regulations across target markets.
The Certification Engineer will work cross-functionally with engineering, validation, manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and regulatory agencies to achieve timely certification and market entry for new vehicle programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead vehicle homologation and certification activities for battery electric heavy-duty trucks, buses, or commercial vehicles.
- Interpret and apply global regulatory requirements including UNECE, EU Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA), FMVSS, CMVSS, GB, ADR, and other regional standards.
- Develop and manage certification plans, schedules, compliance matrices, and approval documentation.
- Coordinate certification testing activities including:
- Electrical safety
- EMC/EMI
- Functional safety
- Battery safety and abuse testing
- Braking
- Lighting and visibility
- Noise and environmental compliance
- Cybersecurity and software compliance where applicable
- Interface with regulatory authorities, technical services, test laboratories, and approval agencies.
- Support design reviews to ensure regulatory compliance is embedded early in product development.
- Review engineering changes and assess certification impact on approved vehicle configurations.
- Manage Conformity of Production (CoP) and ongoing compliance activities.
- Maintain awareness of evolving regulations related to electric vehicles, battery systems, ADAS, cybersecurity, and heavy commercial vehicles.
- Support audit preparation and responses for regulatory and certification bodies.
- Collaborate with suppliers to ensure component-level compliance documentation and approvals are complete.
- Prepare technical reports, compliance evidence, declarations, and certification submissions.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related discipline.
- 3+ years of experience in vehicle certification, homologation, regulatory compliance, or automotive validation.
- Experience with battery electric vehicles (BEV), high-voltage systems, or commercial vehicle platforms.
- Strong understanding of global automotive regulations and standards.
- Experience coordinating certification or validation testing programs.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical standards.
- Strong project management and cross-functional communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and engineering documentation systems.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with heavy-duty trucks, buses, or commercial vehicle manufacturers.
- Familiarity with:
- UNECE R100, R10, R13, R29, R155, R156
- ISO 26262
- ISO 21434
- SAE and FMVSS standards
- Knowledge of high-voltage battery systems and charging infrastructure regulations.
- Experience working with certification agencies such as TÜV, RDW, UTAC, or similar authorities.
- Understanding of functional safety and cybersecurity compliance processes.
- Experience with global homologation strategies for multi-market launches.
