Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
Location: Liverpool (Office-based, 5 days per week) Salary: £100,000 - £120,000 + 10% bonus Type: Full-time, Permanent Reporting to: Managing Director Sector: Construction (Owner-Managed Business)
A highly successful, owner-managed construction business is entering a significant growth phase and now requires a commercially minded Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This newly created role will bring financial discipline, strengthen commercial decision-making, and build a high-performing finance function capable of supporting the next stage of scale.
The CFO will act as a strategic partner to the Managing Director and shareholders, providing financial and commercial leadership across the business. The role will ensure robust financial governance, improve visibility of performance, and drive commercial value through better insights, processes, and decision-making. The CFO will also develop and mentor the existing finance team, ensuring capability grows in line with the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as a trusted advisor to the MD and shareholders, contributing to strategic direction, investment decisions, and long-term planning.
- Provide commercial insight and challenge to ensure profitable growth, effective risk management, and strong operational performance.
- Lead financial elements of growth initiatives.
- Own the financial strategy, planning processes, forecasts, and budgets.
- Enhance financial controls, policies, and risk management frameworks.
- Ensure statutory compliance, timely reporting, and effective financial stewardship.
- Strengthen the commercial rigour behind bids, contracts, pricing, and project profitability.
- Support operational leaders with margin improvement, cost control, and commercial negotiation.
- Introduce improved KPIs, dashboards, and performance metrics to drive accountability.
- Manage all banking relationships, ensuring facilities support working-capital needs and future growth.
- Lead conversations with lenders regarding refinancing, covenants, and funding strategy.
- Maintain strong cash-flow forecasting and treasury management.
- Significantly improve the quality, clarity, and commercial relevance of board packs.
- Provide data-driven insight that highlights risks, opportunities, and forward-looking performance indicators.
- Present financial information in a way that supports informed decision-making.
- Develop, coach, and upscale the existing finance team, ensuring capability aligns with business growth.
- Introduce modern processes, systems, and behaviours that enhance accuracy, efficiency, and collaboration.
- Build a culture of high performance, continuous improvement, and strong business partnering.

Required Experience & Skills

- Proven experience as a CFO, Finance Director, or senior financial leader within a construction environment.
- CIMA/ACCA or ACA qualified.
- Strong track record in owner-managed or entrepreneurial businesses.
- Experience supporting organisations through growth, scaling, or transformation phases.
- Demonstrable success in improving commercial decision-making, margins, and financial governance.
- Experience managing banking relationships, funding discussions, and treasury.
- Track record of building and developing finance teams.
