JW3 Trust is a community charity, known for running JW3, the only Jewish Community Centre and cultural venue of its kind in the UK - open to all, regardless of race, religion, belief, gender, sexuality, ability or age. We opened our doors in October 2013 and have since welcomed over 1,800,000 visits to our purpose-built venue in London, NW3, and reached hundreds of thousands online too.
Our Cinema, Howard Hall, Dorfman Piazza, Café, and over a dozen other studios, learning rooms and activity spaces play host to a diverse, year-round programme of events and activities in pursuit of our charitable mission. We engage thousands of people every week in a range of activities, including adult education, language classes, theatre, music concerts, youth activities, workshops, demonstrations, parties, talks, debates, films, family programmes, a Food Bank and much more.
We are now seeking an exceptional Chair of JW3 Trust to lead our board of trustees, providing strategic leadership and direction to ensure we achieve our ambitious plans over the next exciting phase of our growth and drive the fundraising required to deliver it successfully. This influential role requires significant experience in leadership, a strong grasp of governance, and excellent interpersonal skills. The Chair will work closely with the board, support the CEO, and ensure the organisation grows sustainably while maintaining its values. This is an opportunity to help shape the future of the charity as it expands its impact and reach.
You will be an experienced senior leader, with proven success of working in partnership with senior professionals and lay boards. Your excellent interpersonal skills, problem solving acumen, and your ability to leverage your personal and professional networks to enhance JW3’s income generation and profile, will be key to your success as JW3’s Chair. Board Leadership and Governance:
- Lead the Trust Board in accordance with Charity Commission guidance and best practice in UK charity governance.
- Ensure strong governance, effective oversight of risk, and financial stewardship.
- Chair meetings inclusively, with clarity and authority - drawing out all voices, fostering constructive debate, and ensuring timely decisions and follow-through.
- Support high performance across trustees and committees.
Ambassadorship and Fundraising:
- Serve as a compelling advocate for JW3’s mission and values.
- Play a leading role in cultivating and stewarding major donors and strategic supporters.
- Leverage personal credibility and networks to enhance income generation and profile.
Strategic Oversight:
- Oversee delivery of the five-year strategy and ensure alignment between mission, programming, trading activity, and financial sustainability.
- Provide guidance on long-term positioning, partnerships, and growth opportunities.
CEO Partnership:
- Line manage and support the CEO, offering both challenge and counsel.
- Act as a sounding board and strategic partner while respecting operational boundaries.
- Lead CEO appraisal and succession planning processes.
Committee Engagement:
- Participate in key sub-committees, particularly Trading and Development, ensuring strong oversight of commercial activity and fundraising strategy.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- A strong commitment to Jewish communal life and an appreciation of the diversity of views, traditions, and sensibilities within the UK Jewish community.
- Wholehearted buy-in to JW3’s mission, vision and values. A belief in the importance of community, inclusivity and working cross-communally is critical
- Personal credibility and stature, with the ability to represent JW3 confidently at senior levels.
- A strong personal and/or professional network within the Jewish community.
- Proven experience in major donor fundraising or relationship-led income generation.
- Experience of chairing boards or senior forums, with the ability to balance inclusivity with decisive leadership.
- Sound judgement, emotional intelligence, and the ability to navigate complexity and differing perspectives with sensitivity.
- Strategic thinking combined with practical focus on delivery and impact.
- An understanding of charity governance, financial oversight, and trustee responsibilities; and a commitment to adhere to the Nolan Principles - selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

Time Commitment:
On average, the JW3 Trust Chair will spend up to the equivalent of 2 days per month on the role, including Board meetings. The Chair must commit for at least one term of three years. A chair can serve a maximum of three terms, with the final term able to be extended to four years maximum.
